Violent protests erupt in Islamabad over Imran Khan's imprisonment

On November 27, Islamabad woke up to scenes of destruction, with streets filled with debris, broken glass, and burned vehicles. This came after violent protests by supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who had besieged the city days earlier. The protests, which took place on November 24, led to a security lockdown in Islamabad, with highways blocked. At least six people, including four paramilitary soldiers and two protesters, were killed during the unrest. Pakistani Rangers remained on high alert, continuing to guard the city. Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023, blames the military for his 2022 removal and accuses them of rigging elections to prevent his party from regaining power.

Supporters of jailed Imran Khan gathered for an anti-government rally in defiance of a ban on the congregation in Islamabad. Over 80 police personnel have been injured in clashes with supporters of Imran Khan in Islamabad. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told journalists that the convoy fired on the police and continuously used teargas. He said while the convoy was heavily armed, the police had been instructed not to carry weapons to prevent the situation from escalating. Authorities have sealed off Islamabad and blocked cellphone services to prevent the gathering. Islamabad is on high alert ahead of a series of top-level diplomatic events scheduled over the next two weeks. Notably, it was the latest in a series of protest rallies since last month to press for Khan's release and agitate against the ruling coalition. Pakistan Elections 2024: Amid poll results delay, violence rocks Pakistan

As Pakistanis wait for the Pakistan elections 2024 results, several protests have rocked Pakistan. Pakistan’s general election on Feb 08 was marred by militant attacks, suspension of mobile phones and killing of several people. Imran Khan’s PTI and Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N are in neck-to-neck competition as Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif both declared victory in the elections. Amid the delay of election results, as per the Pakistan Election Commission independents backed by former PM Imran Khan won the most seats. Independent candidates of Imran Khan had won 100 seats, with Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) taking 72 seats. The polls were held for 265 Pakistan National Assembly seats, a party need 133 seats for a simple majority. Analysts predicted there may be no clear winner, adding problems to country’s economic crisis amid the polarised political environment. As per Dawn, PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) are proceeding to form a coalition govt in the Centre, Punjab, and Balochistan. Meanwhile, as per Reuters, candidates backed by the party of jailed Imran Khan plan to form a govt, an aide to the former PM said on Feb 10.
