A resort owner in Maharashtra's Palghar district has been charged with the drowning of a 7-year-old girl in the facility's swimming pool, an official said on Saturday.


The resort's owner, Roman Jan D'mello, has been accused under Indian Penal Code Section 304-A, which pertains to causing death by negligence.


On May 29, a girl from Mumbai's Bhandup area drowned in the swimming pool of the resort in Rangaon, Palghar district, according to police reports.


The girl was visiting the resort with her grandmother. She remained in the pool with 14 other swimmers when her grandmother and the others left for lunch about 1 p.m. Unnoticed by others, she drowned in the pool.

Police saw that even the coaches and trainers were away for lunch at the time of the incident.

Toddler dies after falling into open drain in Vasai

In another incident from Palghar's Vasai, the two-and-a-half-year-old boy died after falling into an open drain near his home on Saturday, according to a civic official.

The incident occurred in the Lohia slum colony in Umale Phata. The Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation fire brigade reported that the child, identified as Narendra Goriwale, wandered to the water-filled drain while his parents were at work and his grandmother was busy cooking.

Narendra slipped and fell into the drain. Neighbours discovered his body after his grandmother raised an alarm when she couldn't find him in the house.

An accidental death report has been filed, and the Vasai police are conducting further investigations into the incident.

Six held after mentally unstable man lynched by villagers in Latur

Six people have been arrested after a 40-year-old mentally unstable man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of villagers in Maharashtra's Latur district, police reported on Saturday.

The incident occurred on May 29 in Hadolti village, Ahmedpur tehsil. Police have registered a case against 50 individuals involved in the attack, an official stated.

The victim, identified as Dilip alias Vilas Nagorao Kalgire, reportedly attacked some villagers with an iron rod, seriously injuring one. In response, a mob of around 50 to 60 villagers tied him to a tree and beat him severely.

Kalgire was taken to a hospital in Ahmedpur, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the government hospital in Latur on Thursday.

Authorities have arrested six of the accused so far, the official added.
