The monsoon clouds are hovering in the sky and while it implies a relief from the scorching heat, it also means it’s time to pay extra attention to your skin during the wet and humid rainy season. The Guide spoke to the city’s leading skin experts about the simple precautions the Punekaris need to take this season.

Skin specialist Dr Vipin Deshpande points out that the most important factor is to protect oneself from fungal infection which is caused due to wetness. “Around 90% of skin problems are due to wet skin.

One must not wear tight clothes or wet undergarments. Change your socks daily or on alternate days. Use anti-fungal powder regularly to avoid fungal infection and rashes. Apply sunscreen lotion when you go out as your skin can be affected even in cloudy weather (you can reduce the frequency of using sunscreen though).

Hydrating the skin is also a must during the monsoon as it helps the body deal with the cold and flu viruses. Water also washes away germs and bacteria through your excretory systems. You don’t have to follow the adage of drinking eight glasses of water a day, though, but you should drink whenever you feel thirsty.

Dr Ajay Adhav adds that to avoid wearing wet clothes which cause infection, one can carry an extra pair of clothes. “Avoid using moisturisers, instead use powder-based products and avoid oil-based products,” he advises.

Dr Ajay Deshpande points out that one should also keep one’s hair dry as far as possible. “Also keep your hands dirt-free as the usual entry points for the virus are from there,” he suggests.

Since the rainy season is the breeding ground for cold and flu viruses, ensure you avoid placing your hands anywhere near your face or the faces of other people during the monsoon months.u00a0

How to keep your complexion glowing
>> Use a face scrub twice a week to exfoliate.
> Heavy moisturising creams or oily foundations and cream-based colour makeup should be avoided.
> Try to use face wash containing fruit extracts.
> Use skin brightening toner each time you wash your face to close the pores and restore your skin’s pH balance.u00a0
