Goalkeeper Jordan Kamble, 15, made two outstanding saves in the crucial penalty shootout to help an uncharacteristic St Stanislaus High School (Bandra) get the better of Cathedral & John Connon (Fort) 4-3 via the tie-breaker in the boys under-16 Div-I semi-final of the MSSA inter-school football tournament at the Cooperage on Friday.

The St Stanislaus boys showed good understanding and coordination and with short passing bouts held more ball possession through the match. But they were unable to translate their dominance into goals and had to go through a tense penalty shootout duel.

Brilliant under the bar

Fortunately, goalkeeper Jordan, who was not tested in the entire match, produced brilliant efforts to secure the win for the Bandra school and give them another shot at aMSSA crown. “I was a bit tense in the tie-breaker. But I managed to stay focused and that helped to make those saves. I watched the feet of the strikers and guessed correctly in which direction to dive,” a satisfied Jordan told mid-day.

Jordan blocks Jahaan

In the tie-breaker, Jordan flung himself to the right to block Jahaan Sheth’s powerful left-footer from the second attempt and then dived low to his left to tap away Reyees Surti’s grounder at the left post to clinch the win.

Raghav Subandh, Ranveer Bakshi and Yash Bhatia were the only Cathedral players who managed to convert from the penalty spot. On the other hand, Stanislaus captain Sahil Sargurah’s attempt was easily saved by Cathedral goalkeeper Shayaan Parekh.

Thereafter, Stanislaus strikers Simon Cardoz, Joshua Fernandes, Elijah Fernandes and Yohan Britto successfully scored the next four shots to seal the win. St Stanislaus, who had lost 0-2 to Don Bosco (Matunga) in last year’s final, have a chance to win the title. They will meet the winners of the second semi-final to be played this week between Don Bosco and St Paul’s HS (Dadar).
