KL Rahul to play for India ‘A’ in 2nd game

Senior batter KL Rahul will turn out for India ‘A’ in their second red-ball game against England Lions, starting in Northampton on June 6, say sources. India ‘A’, led by opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, will play their first red-ball game against England Lions in Canterbury on Friday. “Delhi Capitals not qualifying for IPL 2025 Playoffs also meant that free space was created in Rahul’s schedule to go for India ‘A’ ahead of an important assignment for the Test team,” said sources. Abdul Ismail in his prime during the 1970s. Pic/mid-day archives

'I've seen several swing bowlers, but Abdul Ismail will always be on top'

What’s happening in Mumbai cricket? The trio of Milind Rege, Paddy Shivalkar and Abdul Ismail (1945-2025) gone in the space of a few months. More recently, Vijay ‘Papa’ Karkhanis departed too. I was fortunate not to face Abdulla [I always called him Abdulla] in inter-office cricket. He would have been a handful I’m sure. Our seniors like Sunil Gavaskar and Ashok Mankad used to say that if Abdulla’s first ball was an outswinger, we would win. His tally of 244 wickets in first-class cricket bears testimony to his ability. With that deceptive action, he wreaked havoc in many a formidable batting line-up. I have seen several good swing bowlers like Ian Botham, Bob Massie and our very own Balvinder Singh Sandhu, but Abdulla will always be on top of my list. I made my Ranji Trophy debut in 1975-76 when Abdulla was opening the bowling for Mumbai. The four Hyderabad wickets I claimed in their first innings fetched me a lot of satisfaction, but Abdulla guided me too, while he claimed three. I remember bowling nearly 50 overs in that innings and 12 in the second innings while my departed partner sent down 40 in that quarter-final at Wankhede Stadium. At the end of my three-match debut season, I had bowled 147 overs! Considering the amount of overs I bowled, I could have been called a workhorse. But the real workhorse was Abdulla — 11,361 balls in 75 first-class games, I’m told; a majority of them for Mumbai. In another era, a bowler like Abdulla would have played for his country. The loss is India’s, but our loss, through his passing, is even more. As told to Clayton Murzello

IPL 2025 | 'It feels good to be back,' RCB's Josh after recovering from injury

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru support staff was keen to get Josh Hazlewood completely fit for the Playoffs and thus did not hurry him into action by giving him an extended rest. That paid dividends as the Australian fast bowler was at his best on a helpful pitch against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 here on Thursday. The moment the tall Aussie speedster got rid of Shreyas Iyer and Josh Inglis early, it was RCB all the way, as they went on to bowl out PBKS for just 101. Talking to the media after the match, he said that RCB have been performing well as a bowling unit this season, with five to six bowlers bowling well in tandem. He also said that he was surprised by the help the bowlers got from the surface here, which made his task easier coming from a shoulder injury. ‘Feels good to be back’ “During the injury layoff, I worked really hard on the shoulder to get back [on the field] and got some good overs [in practice sessions] in over 10 days to be fit again. Yeah, it feels good to be back, so I was happy with tonight’s performance. The wicket helped, obviously, didn’t it? Not having to bowl fast yorkers or anything like that on coming back from an injury was beneficial. It feels good to be back,” Hazlewood said after bagging three crucial wickets that paved RCB’s path to the final. There is no doubt that the RCB bowlers have been doing well this season, given a bowler of Nuwan Thushara’s calibre has played just one game. Hazlewood said that the bowling unit has grown stronger with every match. “As a unit, we have worked really well. Everyone knows their role, I think everyone is a little bit different, the combination is great, we have got some good variation, everyone has got different strengths and it is just about using them at the right time. I think we’ve just got all bases covered. Any one of the five or six bowlers can bowl at any moment of the game, whether it’s the start, middle or end. Clear planning, execution “There have been a few games where we’ve defended the score, we’ve got some really nice last few overs in games, and it’s just clear planning first of all, and clear execution and commitment that has worked,” said Hazlewood.

IPL 2025: Rohit smashes 81 runs, MI seals Qualifier 2 berth post win vs GT

After a hopelessly one-sided, low-scoring Qualifier 1 on Thursday, the Eliminator, played on the adjacent pitch on Friday, produced a run-feast, much to the delight of the spectators who were deprived of the thrills the previous day. Gill departs early Opting to bat first on a flat track, Mumbai Indians were helped to a huge 228-5, thanks mainly to a stroke-filled, though lucky, knock of 81 by Rohit Sharma. At the halfway stage, one thought it was going to be another one-sided affair as Gujarat Titans would buckle under the pressure, especially after their skipper Shubman Gill, departed early to Trent Boult. Gujarat Titans’s Sai Sudharsan en route his 49-ball 80 But Sai Sudharsan (80 in 49 balls), one of the most talented players to emerge in recent times, and Washington Sunder (48 in 24) kept the chase going till Jasprit Bumrah and Richard Gleeson struck crucial blows to slow down the flow of runs. Sherfane Rutherford (24 of 15), along with Rahul Tewatia, kept GT’s hopes alive till Boult returned to get rid of the former. That dismissal virtually sealed the fate of the match as GT fell cruelly short of the target by 20 runs.       Despite the tough task, all credit goes to GT for the way they pursued the target till the end, thanks largely to Sudharsan. With just a bit of luck, they could well have achieved an unlikely win. But it was not to be as they were restricted to 208/6 in 20 overs. There is no doubt it was a memorable match after Thursday’s low-scoring affair that aggregated just 207 runs. MI themselves surpassed that by a long way after opting to bat first. Then GT also crossed the 200-run mark to give the crowds their money’s worth.  Though the dream of MI winning another title, their sixth, is alive, they have another tough assignment when they take on Punjab Kings in the Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Only then can they think of tackling Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on Tuesday.  Bairstow shines with 47 The star of the day was undoubtedly Rohit, who again showed why he’s considered a big-match player. No doubt he received two early reprieves, but he made the most of that and played an innings of high calibre. His blistering start with Jonny Bairstow (47 off 22 balls), who came in place of Ryan Rickelton, ensured that MI received a solid foundation to post a big total.  There’s no doubt that it was a memorable match for Rohit as he not only posted his highest score of the season, surpassing the 76 not out he had made against Chennai Super Kings, but also en route became only the second batsman after Chris Gayle (357 sixes in 145 innings) to hit 300 sixes (in his 271st innings) in the IPL. He also crossed 7000 IPL runs, only the second to achieve the feat after Virat Kohli. This was also the first time that Rohit had come good in an Eliminator, having not crossed the 20-run mark on the previous four occasions. Of course, these are stats that Rohit personally would not care much about, as long as his effort is in a winning cause. He has, in the past, famously said that an innings is only worth it if it helps the team win.

Rohit-Bumrah turn back the clock in IPL eliminator classic, beat GT by 20 runs

Mumbai Indians marched into Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 after securing a thrilling 20-run victory over Gujarat Titans in a high-octane IPL 2025 Eliminator on Friday. A commanding all-round performance, led by Rohit Sharma’s vintage 81 off just 50 balls and Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional death bowling, ensured MI’s survival in the knockout stages of the tournament. Winning the toss and choosing to bat on a batting-friendly surface at Mullanpur, Mumbai Indians posted a mammoth 228/5 in their 20 overs. Jonny Bairstow, making his debut for the franchise, gave the team a blazing start with a quickfire 47 from just 22 deliveries. The Englishman’s aggressive approach dismantled Gujarat’s bowling rhythm early, as he smashed 26 runs in a single over off Prasidh Krishna. Rohit Sharma, who was handed two reprieves in the powerplay, made full use of his lifelines. The seasoned opener produced a sublime knock, laced with effortless strokes and impeccable timing, ensuring the momentum never dipped. Suryakumar Yadav added impetus through the middle with a fluent 33, while Tilak Varma and captain Hardik Pandya provided vital finishing touches, with cameos that pushed Mumbai beyond the 225-run mark. In response, Gujarat Titans suffered an early jolt with the dismissal of their skipper, Shubman Gill, for just 1 in the opening over, trapped in front by Trent Boult. However, B Sai Sudharsan anchored the innings beautifully with a classy 80, continuing his prolific form this season. Washington Sundar played a blistering hand, striking 48 off just 19 deliveries to keep Gujarat within striking distance of the steep target. Despite a valiant effort by the Titans’ middle order, Mumbai’s bowlers held their nerve. Jasprit Bumrah, MI’s ever-reliable spearhead, delivered a brilliant spell, especially at the death, choking the run flow just when GT looked poised for a dramatic finish. Richard Gleeson also made a key impact by dismissing the dangerous Sudharsan at a crucial juncture, tilting the game decisively in Mumbai’s favour. In the final over, with 24 runs needed, GT still had hope, but Bumrah’s precision ensured there were no last-over heroics. MI sealed the contest by 20 runs and eliminated the Titans, who had faltered in crucial moments, including dropping three catches. A commanding all-round performance, led by Rohit Sharma’s vintage 81 off just 50 balls and Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional death bowling, ensured MI’s survival in the knockout stages of the tournament. GT: 208/6 (20) That final-ball six has breathed new life into Gujarat Titans' chase, dampening what was otherwise a brilliant over from Trent Boult. Just when Mumbai looked to have tightened the noose, a late flourish keeps the Titans' hopes flickering. Now, with 24 runs required off the final 6 deliveries, all eyes are on Richard Gleeson, who has been handed the responsibility of bowling the decisive over GT: 205/5 (19) Richard Gleeson might have flown under the radar for most of the evening, but he’s made his mark when it truly mattered. The English pacer breaks the Titans' backbone by dismissing the well-set Sai Sudharsan for a brilliant 80. A massive breakthrough at a crucial juncture, and Gleeson is visibly fired up! With Gujarat losing their fourth wicket, this could very well be the turning point that swings the game firmly in Mumbai Indians’ favour. GT 170/4 (15.4) Hardik Pandya concedes 13 runs in his over as Sundar unleashes a boundary and a six! The Titans have seized control of the match, gaining momentum with every ball. They’ll be looking to replicate this kind of pressure in the upcoming overs. Meanwhile, Sudharsan remains composed and steady at the crease, anchoring the innings with calm determination. GT 119/2 (11) Sai Sudharsan brings up his sixth fifty of the season in just 28 deliveries. It has been a standout campaign for the young southpaw, and he is reinforcing his status as one of IPL 2025's brightest stars. GT 76/2 (7) Kusal Mendis suffersa hit-wicket dismissal just when he was gaining momentum. His back leg clipped the base of the off stump, dislodging the bails. A promising knock ends in the most unexpected fashion, and Mendis can’t believe it. He was looking in fine touch before this mishap cut his innings short GT 67/2 (6.2) Gujarat Titans have found their footing with a much-needed counterattack. Kusal Mendis launched two towering sixes off Trent Boult, while Sai Sudharsan added another maximum to the tally. This explosive over has injected momentum into the chase. If this pair can build a solid partnership and stay at the crease, GT could claw their way back into contention. GT: 30/1 (3) Trent Boult delivered yet again with trademark precision, removing the dangerous Shubman Gill early in the innings. The Gujarat Titans skipper was trapped plumb in front for just one run, leaving his side reeling in the powerplay. In a moment of desperation, Gill opted for a review, but it proved futile, costing his team a DRS. The seasoned Kiwi pacer once again rose to the occasion, striking early to rattle Gujarat’s top order and hand Mumbai Indians a massive early breakthrough. GT: 3/1 (0.4) Gujarat Titans face a challenging chase as Mumbai Indians set a formidable target of 228/5, powered by Rohit Sharma’s commanding 81-run innings. MI: 228/5 (20) Prasidh Krishna struck once more to secure the Purple Cap with his 25th wicket of IPL 2025, dismissing Naman Dhir thanks to a spectacular catch by Rashid Khan. Krishna’s delivery, intended as a yorker, was slightly fuller and hit the stumps, sealing the wicket. MI: 212/5 (19.2) Mohammed Siraj trapped Tilak Varma with a cunning slower delivery, while Kusal Mendis secured a crucial catch behind the stumps after a determined effort. MI: 194/4 (17.2) Rohit Sharma’s scintillating innings came to a halt at 81 off just 50 deliveries, as Prasidh Krishna outfoxed the veteran with a cleverly disguised slower ball in the 17th over. Attempting to accelerate further, Rohit misjudged the pace and ended up offering a simple catch, drawing curtains on a commanding knock that had laid the foundation for Mumbai’s innings. MI: 194/3 (17.1) Sai Kishore delivered once again at a crucial moment, striking on the final ball of his spell to remove the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav for 33. Bowling a quicker, loopy delivery outside off at 95 kmph, Kishore tempted SKY into playing an aggressive sweep. However, the timing deserted him, and the ball flew straight into the hands of the fielder stationed at deep backward square leg. MI: 143/2 (13) Rohit Sharma brings up his fifty in just 28 balls. The Mumbai maestro is in full flow, showcasing pure class and aggression in equal measure. MI: 103/1 (10) Sai Sudharsan put in a stunning effort at short third, diving to his left to intercept Bairstow’s reverse sweep. He parried the ball perfectly to Gerald Coetzee, who completed a smart relay catch, and just like that, the dangerous Jonny Bairstow departs for 47. MI: 89/1 (8) Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow look in sublime touch, finding the gaps and clearing the ropes with ease. Even in the sixth over, Rohit took Sai Kishore to school, dispatching him for three commanding boundaries. Gujarat Titans are clearly feeling the heat, desperately searching for a breakthrough to stop this blazing opening stand. MI: 79/0 (6) Rohit Sharma took on Siraj in his second spell, smashing him for back-to-back boundaries. Moments later, he got a lucky escape as Kusal Mendis dropped a sharp edge behind the stumps, two lifelines in just three overs for the Hitman. MI: 28/0 (3) Mumbai got off to a promising start with a few well-timed strokes, but none found the boundary. Bairstow and Sharma are now settled at the crease and looking to set the tone for Mumbai as the second over begins. MI: 6/0 (1)

Hit-wicket drama as Kusal Mendis falls in unusual fashion: WATCH

In a rare mode of dismissal, Gujarat Titans’ wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis inadvertently dismantled his own stumps when his foot slipped during a shot in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians at Mullanpur on Friday. The Sri Lankan cricketer’s frustration was palpable as the Titans, who seemed to be gaining momentum, were suddenly jolted back by this unusual setback. Kusal Mendis Hit wicket Ambani power 😁😁😁#RohitSharma #MIvGT #Qualifier2 pic.twitter.com/WRAN0JSKPS — Himanshu Kumar (@hanumanbhakt00) May 30, 2025 The incident unfolded in the seventh over bowled by left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner. Attempting a sweep shot, Mendis got down on one knee, but his back foot slipped beyond control and struck the stumps, triggering jubilant celebrations from the Mumbai Indians camp. This dismissal abruptly ended a crucial 64-run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, following the early loss of captain Shubman Gill in the opening over. Mendis, who managed just 20 runs off 10 balls, including a boundary and two towering sixes, had already faced a difficult evening behind the wickets. The 30-year-old keeper had dropped two vital catches earlier in the game, proving costly for the Titans. Earlier in the match, Rohit Sharma took full advantage of several reprieves to carve out a magnificent 81 runs off 50 deliveries. Jonny Bairstow also made a sensational impact on his Mumbai Indians debut, infusing the innings with explosive batting that helped the five-time champions post a commanding total of 228 for 5. Mumbai’s decision to bat first on a relatively drier pitch compared to the previous day proved to be a masterstroke, as their batsmen took control from the outset. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans were largely their own undoing. Their fielding lapses were glaring, with three crucial catches dropped, two of them off Sharma and one off Suryakumar Yadav, allowing Mumbai’s batters to add valuable runs. Coupled with a below-par bowling effort, these errors proved detrimental in this high-pressure knockout contest. Despite moments of resistance from the Titans, the team struggled to gain a foothold, and Mendis’ bizarre dismissal epitomized their night of misfortune. As the contest intensified, the Mumbai Indians capitalized on Gujarat’s shortcomings, putting themselves in a commanding position to advance in the tournament. The Eliminator clash thus swung decisively in favor of the five-time champions, who now look poised to carry their momentum into the next stage.

IPL 2025 Eliminator: Rohit Sharma rolls back the years in dominant MI innings

Rohit Sharma capitalised on multiple reprieves to craft a commanding 81 off 50 deliveries, while Jonny Bairstow made a blistering impact on his Mumbai Indians debut, helping the five-time champions post an imposing 228/5 against a lackluster Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 Eliminator on Friday. On a relatively drier surface compared to the previous day's match, Mumbai opted to bat first, and their decision paid immediate dividends. Gujarat Titans, however, were architects of their own downfall, dropping three crucial catches, two of Rohit and one of Suryakumar Yadav, while also delivering a lacklustre bowling performance in this high-stakes clash. Rohit, riding his luck, was let off twice during the powerplay. The first chance was spilled by Gerald Coetzee at deep square leg, followed by debutant Kusal Mendis fumbling a routine catch behind the stumps off Siraj. These missed opportunities proved costly, as the veteran opener made the Titans pay dearly with a flurry of audacious strokes. Earlier, it was Bairstow who set the tempo for Mumbai. The out-of-favour England batter, fresh off consecutive half-centuries in county cricket for Yorkshire, wasted no time asserting himself. In just his second over faced, he launched a brutal assault on Prasidh Krishna, smashing the pacer for 26 runs, including three sixes in a single over. From emphatic pulls to straight lofted drives, Bairstow's intent was unmistakable. Rohit joined the party soon after, targeting spinner Sai Kishore during the powerplay. He swept and slogged the left-armer for boundaries and a towering six, guiding Mumbai to their best powerplay score of the season, 79 without loss after six overs. Displaying peak form, Rohit also took on Rashid Khan, an uncommon sight. He drove the Afghan leg-spinner elegantly over cover and later slog-swept him for a six, reaffirming his dominance. At the halfway mark, MI were cruising at 113/1. Suryakumar Yadav's arrival only intensified the momentum. The Indian T20 skipper took on Coetzee with authority, dispatching him for a pair of sixes—one a fierce pull and the other a deft uppercut. Though dismissed for 33, his knock added vital impetus. Tilak Varma (25 off 11), despite a quiet season, rediscovered his touch briefly with three towering sixes before falling to Siraj. Captain Hardik Pandya finished the innings in style, hammering Coetzee for two maximums in the final over to push the total beyond 225. For the third consecutive match, Gujarat conceded over 225 runs, an ominous trend against a team boasting a potent bowling arsenal. Chasing 229, the Titans now face an uphill battle.

IPL Eliminator: Five X-factors to monitor in Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians

The IPL 2025 Eliminator on Friday promises a thrilling, high-stakes encounter as Mumbai Indians square off against Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. While the knockout nature of the match adds immense pressure, both franchises are no strangers to such intense scenarios. Mumbai Indians, the most decorated team in IPL history with five titles, are seasoned playoff veterans. In contrast, Gujarat Titans have rapidly established themselves as formidable contenders, reaching the playoffs in three of their four seasons, including a championship win in their debut campaign in 2022. Rohit Sharma’s playoff paradox Rohit Sharma, joint-most successful player in IPL history alongside Ambati Rayudu with six titles, has cemented his legacy as a captain. However, his batting returns in playoffs paint a less flattering picture. In 21 playoff innings, he has managed just 316 runs at a modest average of 15.8, with only two fifties and nine single-digit scores, striking at just 109. He will be eager to change that narrative when it matters most. Gujarat’s edge and match-ups to watch Gujarat Titans, with a consistent top-order and structured approach, enter the Eliminator with a psychological advantage. They have won five of their seven encounters against Mumbai, including both league fixtures this season, and remain unbeaten against MI at home. Sai Sudharsan, the current Orange Cap leader with 679 runs at an average of 52.23 and a strike rate of 155.38, has been a standout performer. Yet, his personal battle against Trent Boult could define Gujarat’s innings. Boult, who has taken 19 wickets this season, has dismissed Sudharsan twice in 30 deliveries, conceding only 31 runs. Mumbai’s strengths and Suryakumar factor Despite missing key overseas players like Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton, Mumbai’s depth and experience remain their strongest assets. The spotlight will once again fall on Suryakumar Yadav, who has been in sublime touch with 14 consecutive scores above 25. His form will be vital for MI, especially with a slightly depleted batting lineup. Gill vs Bumrah Another key face-off will be between Gujarat skipper Shubman Gill and Mumbai ace Jasprit Bumrah. Gill has been prolific this season with 649 runs at an average of 54.08. However, Bumrah has historically had the upper hand, conceding only 34 runs in 38 deliveries and dismissing Gill twice. Their early battle could dictate the momentum of the game.

Can MI's Suryakumar Yadav match De Villiers' all-time non-opener IPL run tally?

Mumbai Indians are all geared up to face Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 Eliminator match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. In the crucial clash, MI’s premier batsman Suryakumar Yadav will aim to reach another significant milestone. He is just 48 runs short of surpassing former Royal Challengers Bengaluru star AB de Villiers. In the ongoing IPL 2025 season, Suryakumar has already amassed 640 runs in 14 innings. He has registered five half-centuries, with a highest score of an unbeaten 73. According to ESPNcricinfo, he is the first batsman in IPL history to score 600 or more runs in two separate seasons. He had previously achieved this feat during the 2023 edition, scoring 605 runs in 16 matches. Against Gujarat Titans, if the 34-year-old manages to score 48 runs, he will surpass de Villiers’ tally to become the non-opening batsman with the most runs in a single IPL season. In 2016, AB de Villiers scored 687 runs for the Bengaluru-based franchise. In addition to this milestone, the Mumbai-born cricketer also boasts a solid record in knockout matches. Across 11 IPL playoff games, he has scored 329 runs at an average of 36.55 and a strike rate of 133.19. He also has three half-centuries in playoffs, with a highest score of an unbeaten 71. The winner of the IPL 2025 Eliminator between MI and GT will advance to Qualifier 2, where they will face Punjab Kings on June 1.
