IAF’s Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla is prime astronaut for Indo-US mission

IAF’s Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla has been announced as the prime astronaut for the Indo-US space mission. He will be only the second Indian after Rakesh Sharma to be part of a space mission. Mission paved its way after PM Modi, Joe Biden signed a joint statement in June 2023, envisioning a joint ISRO-NASA effort to the ISS. A National Mission Assignment Board has recommended two 'Gaganyatris' as the prime, backup Mission Pilots for this mission. These include Group Capt. Shubhanshu Shukla (Prime), Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair (Backup). The recommended 'Gaganyatris' will commence their training for the mission in the first week of August, informed ISRO. Notably, PM Modi bestowed astronaut wings upon Shubhanshu Shukla after his name was revealed for the Gaganyaan Mission on Feb 27, 2024. The Gaganyaan Mission is India’s first human space flight program, for which extensive preparations are underway at various ISRO centers. Apart from Wing Commander Shubhanshu, Group Capt Prashanth Nair, Ajit Krishnan, Angad Pratap Shukla will also join mission.

During the inaugural day of the India Space Congress (ISC) 2024, ISRO Chief S Somanath revealed that the next satellite, GSAT-20, is primed for launch and anticipated to be deployed by August. Highlighting ISRO's ambitious lunar aspirations, he underscored the necessity for enhanced payload capabilities in their rockets. "Our next satellite GSAT-20 is ready to be launched and will possibly be launched by August…. We need to have higher payload capacity in our rockets as we plan to send people to the Moon," Somanath remarked, setting the stage for ISRO's forthcoming endeavors in space exploration and satellite technology advancement.

Big Achievement! ISRO Conducts 3rd & Final Pushpak RLV Landing

ISRO marked another milestone as it successfully completed its third consecutive Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) Landing Experiment on June 23. Dubbed 'Pushpak', the winged vehicle was released from an IAF Chinook Helicopter at an altitude of 4.5 km and executed a precise horizontal landing, showcasing advanced autonomous capabilities in challenging conditions. Conducted at the Aeronautical Test Range in Chitradurga, Karnataka, the RLV-LEX-03 mission simulated high-speed landing conditions for vehicles returning from space. ISRO confirmed that the experiment achieved all its objectives, paving the way for future missions like the RLV-ORV, focusing on orbital reusable vehicles.

INSAT-3DS: Countdown begins for meteorological satellite mission as ISRO eyes

The launch of ISRO's meteorological satellite INSAT-3DS, aiming to enhance meteorological observations and help in better weather forecasting and disaster warning, is scheduled for February 17.Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), in a post on X on Thursday said that the satellite will be launched onboard a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle F14 (GSLV F14)."The launch of the GSLV-F14/INSAT-3DS mission is set for Saturday, February 17, at 5:30pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR at Sriharikota," ISRO said.In August ISRO had launched successfully launched Chandrayaan-3, for this achievement ISRO was feted with the prestigious Leif Erikson Lunar Prize by the Husavik Museum. In last month January, the Indian Space Research Organisation had injected the Aditya-L1 Solar Mission into its designated orbit.

XPoSat is the first scientific satellite from ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial source. This will be India’s first dedicated mission to study emissions from black holes, neutron stars. The launch will be carried out from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. 2023 has been a successful year for ISRO as many successful missions have been carried out. Chandrayaan-3 was the most iconic as India became the first country to reach the south pole of the Moon. India’s solar mission Aditya-L1 is also nearing success as the spacecraft is inching closer to L1 point.
