Built in 1981 in Bilbao, Spain, the Cuauhtemoc was open to the public for tours during its stay in New York, which was supposed to end that evening. Despite the impact, the Brooklyn Bridge did not suffer major damage and was reopened after a safety inspection. Authorities confirmed that no one fell into the water, so no rescue operations were needed. The incident has shocked both visitors and locals, turning what was meant to be a friendly cultural visit into a heartbreaking tragedy.

He was then detained by the Pakistan Rangers. According to early reports, the crossing was unintentional, and he stepped into Pakistani territory by mistake. After being in Pakistani custody for about three weeks, Shaw was finally returned to Indian authorities. His safe return marks a positive outcome, and officials from both sides ensured the process was smooth and respectful.
