In Photos: Mumbai’s potholes call out the official lie

The second spell of heavy rain that started last week has washed away all the tall claims the BMC has been making about Mumbai’s roads becoming pothole-free in two years. Many of the city and suburbs’ roads are riddled with craters that appear regularly year after year, angering citizens. Though most of the arterial roads have been converted into cement concrete ones now and they are in better shape, patches of asphalt on these roads have also created potholes that hinder the speed of vehicles.

Mid-Day story creates an impact Impact as two days after reports of potholes on Thane East Kopri Bridge were reported, the potholes were filled by the authorities. Mid-day had reported that Thane’s Kopri rail overbridge (ROB) was yet another newly opened bridge to wither within a few months of use, exposing more shoddy work in the state. In Photos: Who will be responsible for potholes this year?

Three weeks ago, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had announced that all wards would repair bad patches and potholes on roads that are less than 9-metre in width within their jurisdiction. However, ward officers claim the civic authorities have been tight-lipped about the issue since and haven’t sent any written instructions despite the monsoon being just around the corner. Corporators allege that this is to maintain secrecy on new road contracts being awarded as contractors refused to undertake repair work. Prajakta Kasale writes
