Doctors in Odisha remove 8-cm-long broken knife piece from lungs of man

A team of doctors in government-run MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, Odisha, removed an eight-centimetre-long broken piece of knife from the lungs of a 24-year-old man, an official said on Thursday. The broken knife piece was in the body of the man for the last three years after a stabbing incident. A group of doctors led by Sarada Prasanna Sahoo, associate professor, of the cardiothoracic and vascular surgery (CTVS) department, removed the sharp metallic foreign object from the lungs of Santosh Das of Kabisurya Nagar in the district by conducting the right thoracotomy operation on Tuesday, the official said. The length of the steel and sharp knife was around eight cm, and its width and thickness were 2.5 cm and 3mm, respectively, said Sahoo. The condition of the patient was good and he was now in the intensive care unit (ICU) under observation, the doctor said. The piece of knife entered his body after he was stabbed by a miscreant in Bangalore, three years ago, when he was working as a labourer. The stabbing was done in his left side neck. He was cured after being treated at Bangalore and there was no complaint for about two years. About a year ago, he suffered from dry cough and fever, raising fears of tuberculosis. He has also completed the nine-month treatment of the tuberculosis, said the doctor. Family members of the patient rushed him to medical college and hospital here when he started getting blood in his cough. He came to the hospital here on April 19. The foreign object was found in his body after conducting an X-ray. It was detected in his right lung after conducting the CT scan and bronchoscopy, said Sahoo. "A group of around eight doctors in CTVS and anaesthesia departments, nursing officers and para-medical staff conducted the surgery and removed the sharp metal piece successfully," he said. "To our utter surprise, the foreign body did not harm any of the vital organs of the body during its movement, though it was very sharp," he said. Leopard mauls 82-year-old woman to death in Pune district

An 82-year-old woman was killed in a leopard attack in the early hours of Friday in Inamgaon village, located in the Shirur Forest Range of Pune district of Maharashtra, a forest official said. According to the official, Lakshmibai Baban Bhoite was asleep on the front porch of her house at Kaul Vasti on Nalge Mala Road around 4.30 am when the wild cat attacked her, PTI reported. “The leopard initially targeted a dog. When the dog escaped, the big cat turned its attention to the elderly woman. It dragged Bhoite across the tar road behind her house. It pulled her nearly 700 feet into a nearby sugarcane field, where her body was later found,” the official said. “The incident was reported to the Shirur Forest Officer in Pune at around 6.45 am by local residents. A team then rushed to the spot. The woman’s body has been sent to the Rural Hospital at Nhavare for post-mortem,” he added. In a first, rare white leopard cub spotted in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri forest In what is believed to be a first for the state, forest officials in Maharashtra have discovered a rare white Indian leopard cub in Ratnagiri district, the officials said on Thursday. Confirming the rare sighting in state, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Girija Desai from the Ratnagiri forest department, said, “We have come across a white newborn cub of an Indian leopard in Ratnagiri district. We also found the cub's mother and an another cub nearby.” She added, "We have also located the mother with an another cub at the spot. We are using camera traps and keeping a close tab on the mother and cubs. As the cub is extremely small it is difficult to say if it is leucistic or albinistic. However this is the first such record from Maharashtra where a white colour leopard cub has been spotted." Leucistic or lucism happens due to genetic mutation that leads to abnormally pale or light coloration. If compared with albinistic or albinism in leopards, the body coat with visible rosette patterns will be replaced with very pale or white fur due to the condition. Pahalgam terror attack: Iran reaches out to India, Pak to de-escalate tensions

As tensions escalated between India and Pakistan following Tuesday’s deadly Pahalgam terror attack, Iran on Friday reached out to the two countries to de-escalate the situation, reported news agency PTI. Saudi Arabia also appeared to be concerned over the hostilities between New Delhi and Islamabad with its foreign minister holding phone conversations with his Indian and Pakistani counterparts. "India and Pakistan are brotherly neighbours of Iran, enjoying relations rooted in centuries-old cultural and civilisational ties. Like other neighbours, we consider them our foremost priority," Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi wrote in a social media post. Araghchi said Tehran stands ready to use its good offices in Islamabad and New Delhi to "forge greater understanding at this difficult time" in line with the spirit of Persian poet Saadi. Amid fears of a military escalation between India and Pakistan, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud also spoke to his Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, as well as Pakistan's Mohammad Ishaq Dar, PTI reported. "Had a telecon with Foreign Minister @FaisalbinFarhan of Saudi Arabia. Discussed the Pahalgam terrorist attack and its cross-border linkages," Jaishankar said on X. A Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson, stating that Dar had received a phone call from Al Saud, added that the minister briefed his Saudi counterpart on the decisions taken by the country’s National Security Committee in response to the unilateral measures announced by India, reported PTI. Dar also "cautioned" against further escalation and reaffirmed Pakistan's resolve to "respond firmly to any aggression", the spokesperson said. The Iranian Foreign Minister quoted Saadi, saying, "Human beings are members of a whole; in creation of one essence and soul. If one member is inflicted with pain, other members uneasy will remain." India announced a series of punitive measures against Pakistan on Wednesday, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, the closure of the only operational land border crossing at Attari, and the downgrading of diplomatic ties, in response to the cross-border links to the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. In retaliation, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian airliners and suspended all trade with New Delhi, including through third countries. Pakistan also rejected India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, warning that any attempt to stop the flow of water would be seen as an "act of war”. Amid widespread national outrage over the Pahalgam terror attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed on Thursday that the perpetrators would be pursued "to the ends of the earth”. He promised to "identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers”. Addressing a rally in Bihar's Madhubani on Thursday, PM Modi had stated: "Friends, today from the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world: India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers." "We will pursue them to the ends of the earth. India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism. Terrorism will not go unpunished," he added. "Every effort will be made to ensure that justice is done. The entire nation is firm in this resolve. Everyone who believes in humanity is with us. I thank the people of various countries and their leaders who have stood with us in these times," PM Modi said in Bihar. (With PTI inputs)

Pak Senate passes resolution rejecting 'attempts to link' it with J-K attack

Amid Indo-Pakistan tensions, Pakistan's Senate on Friday passed a resolution rejecting India's "frivolous and baseless attempts" to link the country with Pahalgam terror attack. The attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam on Tuesday killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for Pahalgam terror attack. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar moved the resolution, which got across-the-board support from parties in the Upper House of parliament. "Pakistan remains fully capable and prepared to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity against any aggression, including water terrorism or military provocation," the resolution said. The resolution, rejecting all "frivolous and baseless attempts" to link Pakistan with the attack, said killing innocent civilians was against the values upheld by Pakistan. It condemned the orchestrated and mala fide campaign by the Indian government to malign Pakistan, which follows a familiar pattern of exploiting the issue of terrorism for a narrow political goal. The resolution also condemned India's declaration to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and said the move amounted to "an act of war." Earlier, the deputy prime minister informed the house that the Foreign Office briefed diplomats from 26 countries about the current situation in the region. He said Pakistan's armed forces were fully prepared to respond to any Indian misadventure and added that any such move would be met in kind, similar to the past. The resolution comes a day after the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting by top civilian and military leaders in Pakistan put the Simla Agreement and other bilateral accords with India on hold, suspended all trade, and closed its airspace for Indian airlines. On Thursday, Islamabad also closed the Wagah border post, cancelled visas given to Indians under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES), and asked military advisers at the Indian High Commission to leave, mirroring steps taken by India over the Pahalgam terror attack. India on Wednesday suspended the Indus Water Treaty and downgraded diplomatic ties with Islamabad. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. India will identify, punish every terrorist and their backers: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday declared that the killers of Pahalgam will be pursued “to the ends of the earth” and promised to “identify, track and punish every terrorist and their backers”. In his first speech after the April 22 attack in Pahalgam in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed, the prime minister vowed to punish terrorists behind the strike and said India’s spirit will never be broken by terrorism. Modi spoke briefly in English and said, “Friends, today from the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the earth. India’s spirit will never be broken by terrorism. Terrorism will not go unpunished.” In the stern message, he said, “Every effort will be made to ensure that justice is done. The entire nation is firm in this resolve. Everyone who believes in humanity is with us.” “I thank the people of various countries and their leaders who have stood with us in these times.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi In a message to Pakistan without naming the country, the prime minister said he will state categorically that the terrorists who carried out the attack and those who hatched the conspiracy, will be punished beyond their imagination.  “Punishment will definitely be served.” Paying condolences to the victims and their families, he said citizens across the country are in mourning over the brutal manner in which terrorists killed innocent civilians. The nation stands with their families, he said. Pak’s visa services revoked India on Thursday announced suspending visa services to Pakistani nationals with immediate effect. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said all existing valid visas issued by India to Pakistani nationals stand revoked with effect from April 27. It said medical visas issued to Pakistani nationals will be valid only till April 29. The MEA said all Pakistani nationals currently in India must leave the country before the expiry of visas. With the suspension, several Pakistani nationals visiting India started returning home through the Attari-Wagah land route in Amritsar on Thursday.  Moreover, Pakistani nationals will not be permitted to travel to India under the SAARC visa exemption scheme (SVES). Any Pakistani national currently in India under the SVES visa scheme has 48 hours to leave the country, said the ministry. Protest outside Pak High Commission More than 500 people staged a protest near the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi. Holding placards and raising slogans, the protesters demanded decisive action against the neighbouring country, accusing it of supporting terror activities in India. The Delhi Police had put up barricades around 500 metres from the high commission, and the protesters were stopped there, an officer said. “Earlier, the government carried out a surgical strike. We demand similar action again to eradicate terrorism. This was a shameful attack on innocent tourists,” a member of the Anti-Terror Action Forum said. “We trust the government has already made a plan,” he added Another protester said the government must take strict action against Pakistan. As some of the protesters tried to climb over the barricades in a bid to march towards the high commission, they were stopped by police personnel and taken away. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police had beefed up security outside the high commission after several organisations called for a protest. Pak discusses response to India’s move

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday held a meeting with key ministers and the three services chiefs to formulate the country’s response on India’s move to suspend the Indus Water Treaty and downgrade diplomatic ties after the Pahalgam terror attack.  India on Wednesday suspended the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 and announced downgrading diplomatic ties with Pakistan, including expulsion of its military attaches, in view of the cross-border links to the Pahalgam terror attack. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, while speaking to a private television channel late on Wednesday, said “India has not given any evidence. They have not shown any maturity in their response. This is a non-serious approach. They started creating hype immediately after the incident.” ‘Act of War’ Pakistan on Thursday blocked its airspace for Indian airlines, closed the Wagah border crossing, suspended all trade with India, and said any attempt to divert water meant for Pakistan under the Indus Water Treaty will be considered an ‘Act of War’. On Friday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to extend an invitation for the groundbreaking ceremony of the revamped Rs 65,000-crore Amaravati capital city project, scheduled for May 2. Following a period of stagnation from 2019 to 2024, Naidu has reinvigorated the Amaravati city project, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh situated along the Krishna River, upon regaining power in the state in 2024. "The chief minister is meeting the prime minister post lunch to invite him for the groundbreaking ceremony of the renewed Amaravati city project," an official source informed, reported news agency PTI.  Naidu aims to build a world-class, inclusive and modern urban hub inspired by global cities such as Amsterdam, Singapore, and Tokyo, sources stated, reported PTI. Amaravati was designated as the new capital of Andhra Pradesh following the state's bifurcation in 2014. According to PTI, the Amaravati Master Plan, crafted by the UK-based firm Foster and Partners, envisions comprehensive development over a 217.23 sq km area between Vijayawada and Guntur towns. The city is envisioned to be an economic hub for the region and is expected to create 1.5 million jobs, house 3.5 million people, and have a GDP of USD 35 billion by 2050. Officials said the estimated budget for Amaravati's development works, as arrived in 2024, was about Rs 64,910 crore, with Phase-1 of the project to be completed over the next three years. Of the project cost, the government of India committed Rs 15,000 crore in financial assistance in 2024 and facilitated World Bank and Asian Development Bank support to the tune of USD 800 million each. The Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) is designing massive branding programmes to attract anchor investors and private sector participation for economic development. Public-private partnership (PPP) projects are being promoted, and a special purpose vehicle (SPV) is envisioned to meet viability gap funding. Andhra CM Naidu promotes rapid development through PPP mode Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to promote large-scale development projects through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model for accelerated growth. Naidu said on Thursday that PPP is the most effective path to achieve the Swarnandhra-2047 vision and attract substantial investments into the state's development ecosystem, reported PTI.  "To drive rapid growth through PPP, we must tap every available resource and efficient mineral management is important to get additional revenue," an official press release quoted Naidu as saying.
