A Peasant of El Salvador
A Peasant of El Salvador is based on the story of a Central American peasant. It is an English comedy which narrates the story of a farmer and his family during the time of the civil unrest in 1989.
The peasant has a big family, a big heart and a small piece of land and the family faces many hardships during the unrest. The man waits for his time to take a turn, accepting all the atrocities like land reforms, repression, guerilla warfare, death squads, and dictatorship.
Years later, he finds his voice at a historical event that shook the world. The story is woven by three narrators and the plot takes you through the mountains of Central America.
Director Quasar Thakore Padamsee, says, “It is a beautiful story told with humour which is exciting. The story is based on a true historical event which has a lot of similarities to Indian culture. The happenings in the play are relevant in some way or the other.
I had to do research on the place and about its culture before making the play. But it was fun to know that there is a place which has some things similar to India, even though it’s geographically far away.”
The play is written by Peter Gould and Stephen Stearns and is supported by actors like Meher Acharia-Dar, Suhaas Ahuja and Pramod Pathak.
