Makes waves abroad

From the racy Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi in 2000 to item songs like Beedi, Aisa Jaadoo and Sheila ki Jawani, Sunidhi Chauhan is as popular as any B-town actress. With numerous concerts abroad, and her recent jugal-bandi with Latino singer Enrique Iglesias, Sunidhi is now the face of Indian playback singing abroad. The lady who is now representing India in an international charity campaign talks to CS about her favourite international artists and the growth of international music in India:

Who: Sunidhi Chauhan
What: Talking about her favourite artists
Where: At a studio in Goregaon

Foreign influenceu00a0
Artists like Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Usher, Celine Dion rank amongst my favourites. You will always find them on my playlist. To the extent that they have inspired me in my journey as a singer. But Lataji (Mangeshkar) has been my inspiration ever since I started singing in the industry from the age of four. I spent my days listening to her numbers and learning from them.

Global galu00a0
People say that I am a versatile singer and that my voice has a global appeal. Trust me, I sing straight from the heart. I don't calculate things like my tone or the pitch of my sounds. I just try to emote the lyrics through my singing. I would say that my songs have an spontaneous flow of emotions rather then a forced calculated feel to them. That's my USP and reason why people relate to me easily. My exposure to international music has only honed my skills.

Hin-glish dilemma
I am for good music, whether it's a Hindi song with English lyrics or vice versa. I cannot judge the trend of English words in Hindi songs because I am a part of the trend. I have sung so many songs that have English lyrics in them. I enjoy the process of creating a song. The output might differ from good, mediocre or bad. In such circumstances, one has to work towards making it better. And as we all know, too much of anything is always bad.

Talent hunt
We have singers with versatile voices throughout the length and breath of our country. But sadly, some of them never even get a single chance. Some simply don't have the drive to succeed while others face objection from family. But our music industry has evolved greatly, and there's a lot of scope for people with different voices. It's an exciting time for singers!
