Some Nigerian fans are blaming the absence of their mascots for their dumping from the World Cup.

u00a0Nigerian spectators were barred by security from entering stadiums with handful of green-painted live chicken.

u00a0"We always bring them to Nigeria's matches. At the World Cup in France 1998, nobody ever banned us," said Nigerian fan Sani.

"We can't understand why South Africa did not allow our lucky charms."

u00a0Nigeria had a hatful of chances against Argentina in their opener but could not score. In subsequent games, they took the lead against both Greece and South Korea but failed to hold on.u00a0

Spidercam enthralls one and all

This may be the World Cup of the vuvuzela, the makarapa and the diski. But the one object that never fails to excite spectators massed at every stadium in South Africa is the spidercam.

u00a0It is an engineering marvel invented by an Austrian. Suspended high above the theatre of action by four steel wires, the spidercam contraption swoops across the stadium, pausing every now and then as its camera lens twists and turns to shoot cheering fans waiting patiently for games to kick off.

u00a0Then, during live match action, the spidercam travels the length and breadth of the ground, providing brilliant overhead shots for broadcasts around the world.

Spidercam has been used at the last two Champions League finals and was seen in India during the closing stages of the Indian Premier League too.
