Utd’s Amorim earns first league win; Chelsea beat Villa

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim earned his first Premier League win with a 4-0 rout of Everton, while troubled Manchester City will try to revive their fading title hopes in a blockbuster clash against leaders Liverpool later on Sunday. Chelsea climbed to third place with a 3-0 win against spluttering Aston Villa. Amorim stole the spotlight in Sunday’s early games by extending his unbeaten start with United to three matches. United were held to a 1-1 draw at Ipswich in his first Premier League game last Sunday. Ruben Amorim This was the most encouraging result of Amorim’s brief time at United as they recovered from a slow start to dispatch lowly Everton. Marcus Rashford had scored the first goal of Amorim’s reign after just two minutes at Ipswich and he was on target again in the 34th minute against Everton. United struck again seven minutes later. Branthwaite lost possession to Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes teed up Joshua Zirkzee to convert with ease.  Rashford underlined United’s superiority just 20 seconds after the interval as he applied a cool finish to Diallo’s incisive pass for his seventh goal this season. Zirkee struck again in the 64th minute with a composed strike from the influential Diallo’s assist. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Barcelona loses at home for the first time this season

Barcelona lost at home for the first time this season when the Liga leader was stunned by Las Palmas 2-1. Sandro Ramirez and Fábio Silva scored for the Canary Islands club on either side of Raphinha's equaliser to give Las Palmas its first win at Barcelona in more than 50 years on Saturday. Barcelona played superbly in the first three months under new coach Hansi Flick and was flying high after convincing victories over Real Madrid in the domestic competition and Bayern Munich in the Champions League. It had won all eight of its home games. But it has gone three rounds of La Liga without a win. Before Las Palmas, it fell at Real Sociedad 1-0 and drew at Celta Vigo 2-2 after squandering a two-goal lead in the final minutes. The dropped points mean Madrid, despite its own troubles, especially in the Champions League, can move ahead of Barcelona in La Liga. It trails Barcelona by four points with two games in hand. "I don't care about scoring, I care about winning," Raphinha said after his standout performance was unable to end Barcelona's slump. "We have to take a hard look at what we are doing wrong. We have slipped in our form and are letting games get away form us. We have our next game on Tuesday (at Mallorca), and we need to turn this around so we can win the league." Atletico Madrid was only two points behind Barcelona in second place " and with the same number of games played " after Antoine Griezmann scored a gem of a goal in a 5-0 demolition of last-placed Valladolid. History for Las Palmas Las Palmas savored its first victory at Barcelona since the 1971-72 season and just its third victory at the Catalan club overall. The other visits by the modest side that wears all yellow uniforms to Barcelona have ended in 34 defeats and three draws. "We are thrilled because we have made history," Sandro said. "When you start the season you think that these games are usually going to end in wins for the bigger side, but if there is one thing we believe in is our capacity to work hard all week to get results like this." Barcelona's Lamine Yamal returned from a right ankle injury that sidelined him for three weeks. Yamal appeared as a halftime substitute and Jasper Cillessen saved his best shot. The Las Palmas goalkeeper also palmed a Raphinha free kick over his bar in the final minutes. Sandro, a former Barcelona youth player, capped a fine five-pass buildup by Las Palmas from its own box as it masterfully undid Barcelona's high pressure in the 49th minute. Raphinha had already hit the crossbar in the first half before he equalized in the 61st. The Brazil forward took a short pass from Pedri just outside the area, skirted across the edge and drilled a shot between two defenders. But Barcelona was caught pushing forward for a second goal when Silva controlled a ball from Javi Muñoz and sent in a shot bouncing past Iñaki Peña in the 67th. The unexpected loss dampened Barcelona's celebration of its 125th anniversary, which included the debut of its new mascot "Cat," a large, yellow feline wearing its team kit. Balde carried off Barcelona lost left back Alejandro Balde early in the game when he couldn't continue after he crashed into Sandro at full speed. Balde appeared to hurt his upper chest or neck area when he ran into Sandro's shoulder. He was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Gerard Martín. Griezmann applauded Griezmann scored one of the goals of the season when the forward exchanged a quick one-two with Julián Alvarez and used a sleek touch of the inside of his boot to roll the ball with him as he spun before dinking it over the Valladolid goalkeeper. That was the visitor's fourth goal. Shortly after, Valladolid fans stood up and applauded when Griezmann was substituted. "That is what every players wants, to make people enjoy what we do. So I appreciate their warmth," Griezmann said.Atletico also got goals from Alvarez, Clement Lenglet, Rodrigo de Paul, and Alexander Sorloth. Espanyol ends losing streak Espanyol beat Celta 3-1 to end a streak of four losses in the league and relieve pressure on coach Manolo González. Alaves also drew with Leganes 1-1 at home. EPL: Bukayo Saka shines as Arsenal thrash West Ham 7-goal thriller

Bukayo Saka scored once and provided two assists as Arsenal thrashed West Ham United 5-2 to moved up to second in the Premier League table.  All of the goals came in a remarkable opening period at London Stadium, where Gabriel Magalhaes, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz put Arsenal 4-0 up inside 36 minutes. But quickfire strikes from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson gave West Ham hope, though their chances of a comeback were quashed when Saka, who also provided two assists, added Arsenal’s fifth on the stroke of half-time. It is only the fourth time in Premier League history that there have been seven goals scored in a single half, but the Gunners put in a more measured display after the interval to ensure there was no hint of further drama. Arsenal now sit six points behind leaders Liverpool, who face a heavyweight clash with Manchester City on Sunday, while West Ham remain in 14th. Saka created Arsenal’s first two goals, with his 10th-minute corner headed home by Gabriel, before the England winger laid it on a plate for Trossard to tuck in a second before the half-hour. In so doing, Saka became the first player to reach double, Premier League reports. Arsenal seemed to seal the win with two quick goals. Odegaard converted a penalty after Lucas Paqueta fouled Saka, and Havertz capitalized on poor defending to score past Lukasz Fabianski. In stoppage time of the first half, Gabriel was punched by Fabianski, and after a VAR review, the penalty was confirmed. Saka stepped up and fired the ball past Fabianski to restore Arsenal’s three-goal lead in the stoppage time of the first half. Michail Antonio almost cut the deficit again after the break, though his effort deflected narrowly wide, while West Ham substitute Danny Ings could only drill wide after rounding David Raya late on as Arsenal held out for an emphatic triumph. "We made it crazy. We played so well at the start of the game. We scored three early goals and then they score one immediately after kick-off and then another one - then it was game on. We have to manage the game - we did that really well. The last two games were tricky and to score goals is a big one," Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said after the win. Mehtab’s strike secures Mumbai City’s 1-0 victory over Hyderabad

Mumbai City FC defeated Hyderabad FC by 1-0 at the Mumbai Football Arena in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season on Saturday.  The Islanders returned to winning ways at home courtesy of a solitary goal from Mehtab Singh as Petr Kratky’s men put the preceding defeat against Punjab FC behind by securing their third win of the ongoing season. With his assist, Chhangte became Mumbai City FC’s outright highest goal contributor in ISL (36 - 21 goals and 15 assists), leaving behind Bipin Singh. The hosts started the game with extra motivation, troubling the Hyderabad FC penalty area with crosses and penetrations. The game’s first chance fell to Lallianzuala Chhangte, who dropped his shoulder and lost his marker Parag Shrivas in the box before testing Lalbiakhlua Jongte with a vicious left-footed effort. However, the Hyderabad FC goalkeeper was alert to the danger as he parried the effort to safety. Also Read: IN PHOTOS: Mumbai City FC players go traditional to celebrate Diwali The Islanders finally broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Mehtab Singh, who is ever dangerous from set-pieces made an exceptional movement to head home a corner delivered by Chhangte. Mehtab lost his marker brilliantly with his intricate movement and came up with a powerful header to beat Jongte in goal. Mumbai City FC’s celebrations were short lived as their midfield maestro Toral limped off the field making way for Brandon Fernandes.  The Spaniard was struggling with an ankle injury and despite his best efforts to play through the pain, Toral simply couldn’t continue. Therefore Petr Kratky decided to deploy Brandon in the absence of Yoell Van Nieff and Jeremy Manzorro on the bench. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. ‘Best stability test is anfield’

Pep Guardiola says he is braced for the challenge of turning around Manchester City’s fortunes after the worst run of his managerial career ahead of a daunting trip to runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool.  Winless in six games City are without a win in six games, with five consecutive defeats followed by a 3-3 Champions League draw against Feyenoord on Tuesday, when City blew a 3-0 lead in the final 15 minutes.  Defeat at Anfield on Sunday would leave the Premier League champions 11 points behind Arne Slot’s men. Guardiola’s angst was clear in midweek as he appeared on camera after the Feyenoord game with a number of self-inflicted scratches on his face.  Pep Guardiola The 53-year-old recently extended his contract at the Etihad until 2027 and said the chance to overcome a rare period of adversity played a part in that decision. “The moment I feel I’m not positive for the club, another one will come. It has to be [the case]. But I want an opportunity to try to do it,” Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference on Friday. “I don’t want to run away. I want to be there. I want to rebuild the team in many aspects from now on until the end of the season, the next seasons, to try to continue up there.” City have repeatedly rewritten the record books of English football during Guardiola’s eight years in charge. They have won six Premier League titles in seven seasons, including an unprecedented four in a row, and won the treble in 2023.  But Guardiola has repeatedly called his side “fragile” and lacking in confidence in recent weeks. “In the first knock we are not as stable as we have always been,” he said.  “In the past when we were able to go 3-0 up, we didn’t score the fourth, we didn’t score the fifth, but the game was dead.  “Now in the first moments [of adversity] I don’t know how we are going to react for obvious reasons that we have, for the desperation to win, for the absence of important players. The best test to prove how stable we are is Anfield because we cannot expect they will not have that moment and momentum and that is when we have to stand up as a team,” he added.  Guardiola, though, disagreed that City’s squad is in need of an overhaul in the transfer market.  Lot of players missing Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, while Guardiola has had to cope without a number of other key players. “You have to now change everything — I don’t completely agree with that. We cannot forget three months ago we were champions of the Premier League,” he said. Saturday’s results . Brentford 4-1 Leicester City. Crystal Palace 1-1 Newcastle. Nottingham 1-0 Ipswich. ISL: Resilient East Bengal edge past NorthEast United FC for first win of season

A first-half goal by Dimitrios Diamantakos helped East Bengal FC end their winless run by edging past NorthEast United FC 1-0 in a 2024-25 season match of the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan here on Friday night. Dimitrios Diamantakos scored the lone goal of the match in the 23rd minute, which was enough for Oscar Bruzon’s men to secure their first win of the ongoing season in a match that ended with 10 players each for both teams.  East Bengal FC were off the blocks quickly as Jeakson Singh caught the NorthEast United FC backline off guard with a vicious cross from the right flank. The cross reached PV Vishnu in space in the penalty area but Gurmeet Singh kept out his tame subsequent effort in goal. The Red and Golds came close to scoring once again from a freekick from close range when Madih Talal struck the target but was kept out by an outstretched Gurmeet, diving to his left. Minutes later, the Highlanders almost grabbed the lead when Parthib Gogoi was through on goal. Just when he was about to slot it home, Lalchungnunga came with a fantastic block to keep the scores level. With both the teams taking the attack to each other, it certainly turned into a feisty affair with plenty of tackles flying in. Also Read: "Trust your game like Virat Kohli": Ponting tells these Australian batsmen Eventually, East Bengal FC’s early pressure and persistence in attack paid dividends as Diamantakos headed them into the lead in the 23rd minute following a beautifully weighted ball from Talal. The French midfielder’s initial corner was cleared away by the Highlanders but he latched onto the rebound. Talal then delivered a tantalizing ball on the far post where Diamantakos found himself completely unmarked as he headed it past Gurmeet. NorthEast United almost equalised in the 38th minute when Buanthanglun Samte’s cross from the left flank found Alaaeddine Ajaraei in the box, completely unmarked. But the Moroccan’s header struck the bar before going out for a goal-kick. Later, Parthib had a crack at goal but Prabhsukhan Singh Gill was alert to the danger as he parried it to safety and ensured that the hosts had the lead heading into the dressing room at the break. At the start of the second half, Juan Pedro Benali brought on Guillermo Fernandez and Macarton Nickson, allowing Ajaraei to move to his usual left flank with Guillermo adding a focal point to NorthEast United’s attack. Ajaraei with his relentless movement in and around the final third found a pocket of space just outside the penalty area. The Moroccan went for glory but the ball missed the target just by a whisker. Later, the Highlanders almost skipped a beat when Bekey Oram brought down Vishnu on the left flank very close to the penalty area but the referee rewarded the hosts with a freekick. However, things became worse for the visitors when Mohammed Ali Bemammer, who was already on a booking, brought down Vishnu. The referee handed advantage to the hosts but later stopped the play to hand the marching orders to the Moroccan midfielder in the 72nd minute. An error in judgment from Lalchungnunga saw him receive a red card in the 87th minute after he recklessly brought down Nickson. It brought both teams on even terms with the visitors aiming to salvage something from the game. But despite their best efforts, Oscar Bruzon’s men were resilient in defence as they thwarted away everything that came their way to secure the elusive win. East Bengal FC will next travel to Chennai to face Chennaiyin FC on December 7 while NorthEast United FC will host Mohun Bagan Super Giant on December 8. ‘It was a real ride’

Rasmus Hojlund scored twice as Manchester United won a chaotic Europa League encounter against Bodo/Glimt 3-2 on Thursday, giving Ruben Amorim a vital win in his first home game at Old Trafford.  Alejandro Garnacho gave the home side a lightning start after a shocking error from opposition goalkeeper Nikita Haikin. But Hakon Evjen levelled for the Norwegians and Philip Zinckernagel surged down the right wing to give them a shock lead. Hojlund pulled United level with a superb finish just before half-time and poked them ahead early in the second period.  Also Read: Arsenal must be near-perfect to catch Liverpool: Arteta Ruben Amorim New United boss Amorim said the match was a “real ride” and that he was on a steep learning curve as he gets to know his players. “Of course I see what everybody sees — good moments, difficult moments, some confusion in the end trying to hold the result, but the lads did a great job,” Amorim told TNT Sports.  “They ran, they pressed, they tried to do the thing we worked for these three days and we won,” he added.  And he said he was touched by the reception he was given by the home fans. “The first thing is that half of the stadium doesn’t know me, doesn’t really know me,” he added. “I came from Portugal. I did nothing for this love yet so the way they made me feel at home, it’s so special.”  The former Sporting Lisbon boss, who has said his methods will take time to implement, made six changes from the side that laboured to a 1-1 draw against Ipswich in his first game in charge on Sunday.  Tyrell Malacia returned to the United line-up for the first time since the final game of the 2022-23 season. Arsenal must be near-perfect to catch Liverpool: Arteta

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal will need to be almost perfect if they are to catch runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool but feels momentum is building again after a poor run.  Arsenal, runners-up to Manchester City over the past two seasons, were expected to challenge again this year but instead Liverpool have raced eight points clear of second-placed City.  Also Read: Haaland, Mbappe, Bellingham among nominees for honours The Gunners go into Saturday’s match against West Ham on a high after hammering Sporting Lisbon 5-1 in the Champions League in midweek.  Victory at the London Stadium on Saturday would likely lift Arsenal to second in the table ahead of the Sunday matches , which includes a pivotal clash between Liverpool and City.  Arteta was asked at his pre-match press conference on Friday whether his team would have to be almost flawless to stand any chance of catching Liverpool, who have won 10 of their 12 games.  “If they continue that way, that’s for sure, with the numbers they’re producing and the amount of games they’re winning,” said the Arsenal manager. “But the focus is on us, maintaining the consistency, especially in performances, that will give us the right to win a lot of games... this is a long run.”  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
