Former India all-rounder Karsan Ghavri believes experienced off-spinner R Ashwin and young batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal should have been considered for the upcoming Asia Cup by the Ajit Agarkar-chaired national selection committee. “What is Ashwin supposed to prove after taking 712 international wickets? He has not been treated well despite being a senior player,” Ghavri, who received the CEAT lifetime cricket award at a city hotel on Monday, told mid-day.

Ghavri, 72, who represented the country in 39 Tests and 19 ODIs, is convinced that Ashwin’s experience will play a major role on Indian pitches during the ODI World Cup which begins on October 5. “Ashwin is a quality player and he should have been selected for the Asia Cup. He will be a key bowler in the World Cup on Indian pitches,” added Ghavri.

The former India left-arm pacer also feels that in-form Jaiswal should get a chance in place of Tilak Varma. On the recent West Indies tour, Varma scored 173 runs in five T20I games, including one half-century (51), while Jaiswal scored 90 in just three games with an unbeaten 84 being his highest score. “Yashasvi did very well in the West Indies. He’s in good form and given the way he has been performing, he should have been in the Asia Cup team. He has a bright future with Team India. Everybody is rating Varma very highly, but where is the performance? I hope he does well. The selectors probably feel Varma is a better prospect in the long run,” Ghavri signed off.
