In IPL 2025, Punjab Kings, under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, might just be on the brink of making history. With their recent win over the Mumbai Indians, PBKS is currently enjoying the top spot on the IPL 2025 points table. The side has concluded the group stage with nine wins and four losses, securing a net run rate (NRR) of +0.372 and 19 points.
Skipper Iyer deserves significant credit for the way he has led the side in this edition of the cash-rich league. Speaking about his leadership, former Team India cricketer Robin Uthappa said, "Shreyas has always been an exceptional captain. You always sensed that he felt underappreciated at KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) despite adding value there. He moved to a franchise where not much had been achieved historically, and then went on to win it for them. That says a lot about his leadership and belief."
Punjab acquired his services when Shreyas’s place in Team India was uncertain. But IPL 2025 has turned out to be nothing short of a dream season for the 30-year-old. Under his leadership, Iyer has left no stone unturned, whether it be making astute bowling changes or contributing valuable runs with the bat.
Punjab recently secured a dominant seven-wicket victory over the Mumbai Indians. Chasing a target of 185, Iyer played an unbeaten knock of 26 runs off just 16 deliveries, including a boundary and two sixes. However, it was Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis who stole the show, scoring 62 and 73 runs respectively.
Iyer’s teammate Shashank Singh shared his admiration, saying that playing under Iyer's captaincy has been one of the best experiences of his career.
"Shreyas is a dear friend. I've known him for the past 10-15 years. To be very honest, playing under him, with him being the captain, is one of the best things that has happened to me," said Shashank during the post-match press conference.
He further stated that Iyer empowers not only the players but also the support staff and management.
"The way he gives freedom to everyone, not just me, but all 25 members of the squad, including the support staff, content team, media team, logistics, it's truly commendable," he concluded.
