Australia reached 96 for one in 19 overs before rain stopped play in the first one-day international against South Africa at SuperSport Park yesterday. Ricky Ponting opened the batting and was unbeaten on 40, scored off 55 balls, when a storm hit the ground. Captain Michael Clarke was on 29 not out.
The only batsman to be dismissed was David Warner, who was bowled off an inside edge by Dale Steyn for 20 after hitting the fast bowler for three fours in the same over.
South African captain Hashim Amla won the toss and sent Australia in, saying his decision was based on the likelihood of rain. The weather cleared after a downpour and it was hoped to complete a reduced overs match.
