In a bid to increase safety along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and reduce accidents on that stretch, the Pune District Road Safety Committee has decided to conduct a safety audit.

On Wednesday, the PDRSC convened a meeting of top officers -- including city additional collector Ramesh Kale, highway safety superintendent Amol Tambe, regional transport officer Babashaheb Ajari, National Highways Authority of India project director Suhas Chitnis, Pune Municipal Corporation’s chief engineer Rajendra Raut -- to discuss the issue.

Speaking to mid-day, Kale said, "The meeting sought to prioritise safety on the expressway. The arterial road connects Mumbai to cities like Nashik, Ahmednagar, Solapur and Satara, and accidents are common on this stretch. We have decided to conduct a safety audit to decipher the reason behind the frequent mishaps. We have urged local cops and transport officers to identify accident-prone zones. We will visit those spots, and compile a report on suggestions for implementation of safety measures."
