Mehbooba Mufti accuses 'bigots' of turning Holi into a divisive festival

People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has accused some "bigots" of transforming the festival of Holi into a "source of fear" for minorities, with what she described as the "approval of those in power." According to PTI, Mehbooba’s remarks came a day after she warned that pitting Hindus and Muslims against each other could have "dangerous consequences" for the country. Holi for me has always symbolized India’s Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb. I fondly remember eagerly awaiting the festival & celebrating it with my Hindu friends with immense joy & enthusiasm. Holi, the festival of colours, and the second Friday of Ramzan both fall on the same day this year, leading to increased security measures in several cities to prevent any communal unrest, as per PTI reports. Taking to social media platform X on Friday, Mehbooba shared her thoughts on the situation. "Holi for me has always symbolised India's Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb. I fondly remember eagerly awaiting the festival and celebrating it with my Hindu friends with immense joy and enthusiasm," she wrote. However, she expressed her concern that the festival's traditional spirit of unity and harmony was being threatened. "Some bigots have now converted this celebration into a source of fear for minorities with the approval of those in power. It's time to wake up India. Wishing everyone a Happy Holi!" Mehbooba posted on X. On Thursday, Mehbooba had raised alarm over the rising communal tensions in the country. According to PTI, she stated that the atmosphere in India was being deliberately disturbed by those attempting to create divisions between Hindus and Muslims. "Creating such divisions will have dangerous consequences for the country," she warned. Kashmir Martyrs' Day: Mehbooba Mufti, other politicians claim they're under house arrest Several Jammu and Kashmir political figures, including PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, said on 13 july, 2024 that they were placed under house arrest on Kashmir Martyrs' Day. The leaders claimed that they were placed under arrest to prevent them from visiting the 'martyrs' graveyard' to commemorate the 22 Kashmiris killed by the Dogra army in 1931. There has been no formal confirmation of these allegations. Mehbooba Mufti, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, claimed to be under house arrest at her home in Khimber, on the city's outskirts on Kashmir Martyrs' Day. "The gates of my house have been locked to prevent me from visiting Mazar e Shuhada, a symbol of Kashmir's resistance and resilience against oppression and injustice," she wrote on X, (formerly Twitter), reported PTI. She tweeted that the "sacrifices of our martyrs demonstrate that the spirit of Kashmiris cannot be crushed," yet "observing this day in remembrance of the martyrs has been criminalised." Referring to the repeal of Article 370 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into Union Territories, she stated, "On August 5, 2019, J&K was dismembered and stripped of everything sacred to us.". These assaults will only fuel our will to fight for our rights and dignity. Sajad Lone, head of the People's Conference, also alleged that he was under house arrest. "I really fail to understand what the administration gains by stopping people from going to the martyrs' graveyard," Lone wrote to X. He underlined that people have the right to choose their heroes and martyrs are heroes for the people of Kashmir. "Believing that a government will decide on historical heroes is a clear sign of despotism," he added, stated the report.  Nasir Aslam Wani, the provincial president of the National Conference (NC) in Kashmir, also found his residential gate closed by police on Kashmir Martyrs' Day. "We will always remember the sacrifices of the martyrs," Wani told the audience. Salman Sagar, the president of the NC youth branch, and other party members reported being placed under house arrest, stated PTI.  According to the report, earlier on Kashmir Martyrs' Day, police barred Apni Party leaders, including president Altaf Bukhari, from marching to the "martyrs' graveyard". They prayed on the road instead. NC vice president Omar Abdullah declared that starting next year, Jammu and Kashmir will observe July 13 to honour the 22 martyrs. "This is the last year that the administration can prevent us from honouring our martyrs. "Next year, we'll treat July 13 with the respect it deserves," he wrote on X, the PTI report stated. The Supreme Court has directed the Union government to complete the process of holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30 this year. NC MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi denounced the limits, describing them as a "huge and ugly shift" away from democratic norms. "Stopping people from paying respects to the martyrs is disrespectful to the idea of democracy," Mehdi said per PTI.  Previously, July 13 was a public holiday in Jammu and Kashmir, with big formal ceremonies held every year. However, it was deleted from the list of gazetted holidays in 2020, following the repeal of Article 370. This year, no formal functions were organised, and limitations were placed on the Naqshbandh region of Nowhatta to prevent crowds and maintain law and order. (With inputs from PTI)

Pakistan train hijack: India denies Islamabad's allegation of involvement

India has strongly denied suggestions made by the Pakistan Foreign Office that India had a hand in the Jaffar Express attack.MEA official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We strongly reject the baseless allegations made by Pakistan. The whole world knows where the epicenter of global terrorism lies. Pakistan should look inwards instead of pointing fingers and shifting the blame for its own internal problems and failures on to others." In the particular attack on Jaffar express, the terrorists had been in contact with their handlers and ring leaders in Afghanistan," Shafqat Ali Khan said during his weekly press briefing.Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been strained due to frequent border skirmishes and Islamabad claiming that the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was using Afghan soil to launch attacks in Pakistan. Kabul denies the allegations. The statement came after Pakistan security forces claimed that they had eliminated all 33 Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) rebels who had hijacked the Jaffar Express which was carrying more than 400 passengers. The Pakistani Army have not released any photographs or video of the claimed "successful operation". The rebel BLA on the other hand claims that the ISPR was covering up defeat.Jeeyand Baloch, spokesperson for the BLA, insisted that "the battle is still ongoing across multiple fronts."Baloch claimed that the Pakistani army has "neither achieved victory on the battlefield nor managed to save its hostage personnel."He accused the state of "abandoning its own soldiers" and leaving them "to die as hostages."Released passengers who reached Quetta told Pakistani media that BLA fighters voluntarily freed women, children, and elderly individuals soon after seizing the train. The BLA has also challenged Pakistani authorities to allow independent journalists and impartial observers into the conflict zone. The group contends the army's reluctance to permit such access demonstrates its "defeat."  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 19,826 km of roads completed under Bharatmala, says Nitin Gadkari

A total of 19,826 km of roads have been constructed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana so far, out of the 26,425 km that have been awarded, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply earlier this week, according to ANI. The Bharatmala Pariyojana was approved by the Central government in 2017 with the aim of improving logistics efficiency and connectivity across India. The project also aims to connect tribal areas, aspirational districts, and regions affected by Left Wing Extremism while reducing accidents on these highways by ensuring safer transportation networks. According to ANI, Gadkari stated that the development of high-speed corridors under Bharatmala would significantly reduce travel time between key economic hubs, making transportation more efficient. The corridors are designed to provide faster connectivity to industrial hubs, National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) nodes, Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs), ports, and airports. By February, a total of 6,669 km of high-speed greenfield corridors have been awarded, and construction has been completed for 4,610 km of these corridors. This marks significant progress in enhancing India's road infrastructure. Gadkari highlighted that all national highway projects are carried out following the standards, guidelines, and codes of practice set by the Indian Roads Congress, along with specifications for road and bridge works. According to ANI, he further assured that necessary road safety measures are implemented during the design, construction, operation, and maintenance stages. "Guidelines have also been issued for regular safety audits of all national highways at the design, construction, and pre-opening stages, as well as on existing highways to ensure road safety," he stated. Smart technologies are being increasingly used in highway construction. Gadkari mentioned that automated and intelligent machine-aided construction (AI-MC), LIDAR technology, and drone-based analytics are being adopted to improve construction quality and efficiency. In a separate reply concerning the PM Gati Shakti initiative, Gadkari informed that 115 national highway and road projects covering about 13,500 km and worth Rs 6.38 lakh crore have been examined through the PM Gati Shakti NMP Portal. This process has involved consultation within the Network Planning Group (NPG) under PM Gati Shakti, reported ANI. Gadkari explained that this has led to better planning and execution of infrastructure projects, reducing the time and cost involved in project design, alignment, clearances, and approvals. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is responsible for the development and maintenance of national highways, with all projects aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP) principles. Himachal CM Sukhu alleges corruption in 'Him-Care' scheme

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday accused the previous BJP-led government of corruption in the 'Him-Care' scheme, saying that funds were misused through fraudulent billing. He also said that the state government is restructuring the scheme to improve its effectiveness and ensure transparency. "BJP has lost its ability to bear the truth. A lot of corruption has taken place in Him-Care. I came to know that in private hospitals, out of Rs 350 crore, some funds are still pending, while Rs 190 crore has already been disbursed. In government hospitals, out of Rs 530 crore, Rs 350 crore has been paid. The state government funded this scheme, and we found fraudulent billing where payments were made despite the absence of facilities. Now, we have limited private hospital coverage to dialysis only," CM Sukhu said. The Chief Minister emphasized that schemes should directly benefit people without intermediaries. "Him-Care is a good scheme, but it was not implemented effectively. The health sector has deteriorated. Our government has completed two years, and many medical facilities are unavailable in government hospitals. We are investigating the reasons behind this and are reworking the Him-Care scheme. The opposition should stand with us as we work on the state's healthcare system," he added. The BJP government, under then-Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, launched the Him-Care Scheme in 2019 to provide health insurance coverage to families excluded from the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Jai Ram Thakur had said the state government spent about Rs 100 crore on various schemes to ensure treatment for the poor and provide better health facilities to the people.
