No one injured as coughing constable hits trigger by mistake

An unwell constable had to cough, and the movement caused the trigger of the gun she was holding to be pulled 15 minutes into the last show at the E-Square multiplex late last night. But the only damage the bullet caused was to the floor.

Witnesses said constable Aarati Jagdhankar was asked to take care of a Sten gun when her colleague, Constable Bhor, went to answer nature's call between 11.30 pm and 11.45 pm.

The newly released Aatithi Tum Kab Jaoge had just begun, and Jagdhankar settled down into a chair while keeping the gun on her lap.

Witnesses said just as she opened her mouth to cough, the trigger was accidentally pulled and a bullet fired.

E-Square Manager (Operations) Farhan Shiekh was standing in the porch when he heard the shot.

"It happened 15 minutes after the show started at 11.15 pm, I looked up in the direction of the sound and realised that it was fired from the Sten on the woman constable's lap," said Shiekh.

Constable Jagdhankar looked tense and refused to talk, except to say, "Go to my seniors. If they allow me, only then can I speak to you."

Security guards and others present at the multiplex said the woman constable was not well when she reported for duty yesterday.

"She was coughing and looking exhausted. Her health could have been the reason behind this accidental firing," said a security guard.

Police Sub-Inspector D P Pachange of the Chatushrungi police station was present at the spot at 2.15 am and said, "We are recording the statement, and why this incident took place will only be known after investigations."
