While senior citizens continue to be the most vulnerable group in the fight against Coronavirus, the number of deaths in people below the age of 50 years has increased in the second wave. In the last month, the deaths among youngsters increased by 20 per cent, while among the elderly, it increased by 17 per cent.

The BMC registered 1,948 Covid-19 deaths in the last month, of which 308 were below the age group of 50 years. Out of this, 223 deaths occurred in the age group of 40 to 49, and 73 deaths registered between 30 to 39 years. There were 11 deaths reported in the age group of 20 to 29 years, and one death of a person below 20 years. While the ratio of elderly deaths is still on the higher side, more youngsters are dying in the second wave of the pandemic. Till April, out of 100 Covid-19 deaths, 13 were younger people below the age group of 50 years.

“Even earlier, the maximum cases of infection were among 30 to 50 years of age. But, the death ratio was low. Even now, though hospitalisation increased among younger people, they recovered due to fewer comorbidities,” said an official with the BMC. He, however, admitted that mortality among the working generation has increased during the second wave.
