The BMC’s decision to have a day dedicated to vaccinating women has been receiving an overwhelming response. More women, especially lactating mothers, pregnant women and those between the age group of 45-59, have been coming forward to get vaccinated.

As per BMC data, a total of 1,07,934 women took the vaccine shots during the walk-in drive. Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner, said, “We observed that women usually prefer to go to vaccination camps near their home or to a place where the process is more streamlined and where they do not have to wait. We therefore, arranged this once a week walk-in facility for them. It has worked well.”

Until before the BMC’s new initiative, fewer women were getting vaccinated. On Friday, a total of 1,27,351 women got vaccinated in Mumbai, of which 1,03,550 were vaccinated in BMC-run vaccination centres. As per the data, 43 pregnant women and 228 lactating mothers took the vaccine shots. On an average, eight to 10 pregnant women take their first dose daily in the city.

In the age group of 18-44, 76,707 women took the vaccine, while 19,461 women in the 45-59 age group took the jab in the BMC vaccine centres.  According to the CoWin data, 66,05,878 men and 49,90,474 women have taken the vaccine doses from start till now.
