BMC's Independence Day celebration in Mumbai.
Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) celebrated the 79th anniversary of India’s Independence on Friday with a flag hoisting ceremony at its iconic headquarters. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani unfurled the national flag, extending warm greetings to the city’s residents.
The event drew senior BMC officials, including Additional Municipal Commissioners Ashwini Joshi, Amit Saini, and Abhijeet Bangar, along with department heads, staff, and local citizens. The celebrations began with floral tributes to civic leader Pherozeshah Mehta at his statue outside the building, followed by a garland offered to the portrait of former mayor Vasudev Balakrishna Varalikar in the mayor’s office.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade and BMC’s security team presented a guard of honour before Gagrani addressed the gathering. In his remarks, he spoke of a “New India” ready to protect its strength and sovereignty. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said the mission had given India a renewed identity in the eyes of the world, urging everyone to pledge to uphold it. He also expressed gratitude for the constant support BMC receives from the city’s residents.
The morning brought recognition for three Mumbai Fire Brigade members, Senior Station Officer Santosh Ingole and firemen Sunil Desale and Yogesh Kondawar, who were honoured as recipients of the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service. Gagrani presented them with floral bouquets in appreciation of their service.
As part of the day’s events, the BMC’s Annual Publication 2025 was unveiled, continuing a long-standing tradition by the civic body’s secretary department.
Meanwhile, at Mantralaya, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis hoisted the tricolour and said, “No one can stop India’s development.” Calling Maharashtra a key player in the nation’s growth story, he said the state is taking concrete steps towards its goals and moving in the right direction. He also paid tribute to freedom fighters, martyrs of the independence movement, and soldiers guarding India’s borders.
While addressing the crowd at Mantralaya on Friday, Fadnavis said, “Our security forces showed the world the country's prowess during Operation Sindoor by destroying terrorist and military targets in Pakistan. The world came to know what New India is."
Hailing the Prime Minister, CM Fadnavis also said that, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is progressing and has risen from 11th position to become the world's 4th largest economy.”
