Winging it Local residents feed pigeons at the Powai Lake promenade. When Trevor Chappell got his timing right A little birdie tells us that former Australia all-rounder Trevor Chappell, 72, was to visit the Wankhede Stadium on the same day that New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon dropped in at Mumbai’s 2011 World Cup final venue. Chappell and Luxon visited at different times on Thursday, but imagine how odd it would have looked if both had landed up at the same time. Trevor Chappell at the Cricket Club of India on Tuesday. PIC/CLAYTON MURZELLO Chappell, who was in Mumbai briefly earlier in the week, had bowled an underarm delivery to NZ’s Brian McKechnie in Melbourne on February 1, 1981, to prevent a tie. Chappell spiralled into infamy for no fault of his as he was only following his captain’s (brother Greg’s) instructions. Those who comprehend how seriously NZ as a country viewed the underarm incident would have been tickled had Chappell visited Wankhede in the first half of the day. Mumbai Cricket Association president Ajinkya Naik (right) with NZ PM Christopher Luxon at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. PIC/MCA But we are sure there would have been a lot of laughs too, even without the presence of Brian McKechnie, the Kiwi batsman who faced the underarm. Both parties have moved on and probably laugh about it now. And that’s what makes the willow game so special to all of us. Rebuilding the city... one stitch at a time Maruti Chavan Hamari Silai is holding its first annual event on March 29, from 2 pm to 6 pm, at the BD Somani International School, Cuffe Parade. An ominous tale We have heard plenty of ominous crime tales from Mumbai, but a haunting story from neighbouring Goa demands attention. Filmmaker Patrick Graham, in his latest work, explores the sinister life of Mahanand Naik, Goa’s most infamous serial killer, in his true-crime documentary Dupatta Killer. Patrick Graham. PIC/INSTAGRAM@jplgraham Known for preying on vulnerable women under the guise of love and marriage, Naik’s chilling crimes shook the nation. Through survivor accounts and expert analysis, filmmaker Graham delves not only into Naik’s mind but also into the systemic cracks that enabled his spree. “This is more than a crime story,” Graham states. “It’s an exploration of societal neglect—how marginalised women, lacking opportunities, become easy targets.” The documentary also raises questions about justice and rehabilitation, particularly as Naik’s potential release looms. Premiered last Friday, the documentary also highlights the commendable police efforts in later investigations, contrasting them with earlier missteps that may have cost lives. 23 March,2025 07:32 AM IST | Mumbai | Shirish VaktaniaThe Mumbai Crime Branch has uncovered a racket led by a young and highly educated gang that hacked into the MH-CET system, obtained student data, and contacted candidates, offering guaranteed exam success in exchange for Rs 15-20 lakh per student and admission in top colleges. The scam came to light after few students received suspicious calls and reported them to the MH-CET officials. A formal complaint was later filed by the coordinator of Eduspark—the agency appointed to conduct the examination process. “Unit 05 of the Crime Branch has arrested four individuals from Delhi, who were orchestrating the operation and targeting students across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, and Rajasthan,” said Datta Nalawade, DCP, Detection, Crime Branch. The four individuals arrested from Delhi have been identified as Ambarish Kumar Singh, a third-year student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Delhi and owner of DG5 Online Marketing Firm; Aditya Raj and Ketan Yadav, both third-year BTech students from NIT Delhi; and Abhishek Shrivastav, a BSc Biology student from Delhi. According to the Crime Branch, the gang has previously targeted multiple exams like the entrance exam of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT ) and had now set its sights on the MBA Common Entrance Test (CET) 2025-26, scheduled for April 4 this year. “There are individuals involved in this racket who have been hacking the MH-CET website and accessing candidate data,” said Nalawade. As per the FIR, the accused hacked the website and obtained data of approximately 72 students, some of whom were contacted with offers of guaranteed success in exchange for '15-20 lakh per candidate. Investigations have revealed that the gang’s modus operandi involved remotely accessing candidates’ exam computers (while the candidate is giving the exam) using software such as TeamViewer to provide them with the correct answers. The FIR also says that students were contacted for providing admissions in top colleges after securing the decent marks the high-profile colleges like the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS), Sydenham Institute of Management Studies and Savitribai Phule Pune University (PUMBA) to name a few. Officials discovered that the gang had identified and targeted four examination centres in Maharashtra—Beed, Yavatmal, Gondia, and Wardha—where they planned to provide pre-written answer sheets. “The gang would obtain the answer sheets 30 minutes before the exam and would assist candidates at these centers,” Nalawade added. The Crime Branch also suspects the involvement of insiders at the examination centres and is investigating further in that direction.
23 March,2025 07:28 AM IST | Mumbai | Faizan KhanA 40-year-old man, a resident of Thane’s Wagle Estate and an employee at a petrol pump, was allegedly brutally assaulted by three men over a petty scuffle. The victim, Sandip Singh, was punched and kicked, resulting in a dislocated shoulder and three fractured ribs. The incident took place on March 11, said Pratigya Singh, 27, the victim’s wife. “I kept going to the police station for seven days, but they kept delaying the registration of the FIR,” she said. On March 18, the Wagle Estate Police finally registered the FIR after recording Singh’s statement. According to the FIR, on March 11, while Singh was on duty at the petrol pump on LBS Road at Teen Hath Naka in the afternoon, three individuals arrived on a scooty and waited in the queue. Singh was refuelling another vehicle when the trio asked him to hurry up. “The customer ahead of them had given me Rs 100, and he had filled petrol worth Rs 60. I didn’t have change, which is why it was taking some time. The trio kept shouting at me to rush, and I told them to wait while I returned the remaining money. Instead, they attacked me, throwing punches. I fell to the ground, and they continued kicking me, especially on my upper body,” Singh stated in his complaint. Pratigya added that neither the other staff nor the petrol pump owner intervened to help her husband during the assault. “Eventually, we took him to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that his shoulder was dislocated. It was fixed through surgery. I then took him to a private facility for further scans, which revealed three rib fractures—two on the right and one on the left,” she said. As of now, doctors have advised Singh to take complete rest for more than six months. Being the family’s sole breadwinner, his wife is deeply worried about their future, as the cost of treatment and medication has severely impacted their financial condition. “We have a four-year-old daughter whom we were planning to enrol in kindergarten this year. He worked at the petrol pump loyally for the past 10 years, and this incident has shown how much they (the owner and staff) value loyalty. Not a single person has helped us,” said Pratigya. In the FIR, the police have not mentioned the names of the accused; instead, it only states, “Three friends of Sonu Pal.” The three unidentified individuals have been booked under sections related to criminal intimidation, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and common intention of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
23 March,2025 07:23 AM IST | Mumbai | Aishwarya IyerTrees along the Andheri Metropolitan Court road have received a breather, literally, as concrete that surrounded them has been cleared. The area around the base of the trees has now been replaced with red soil by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. On March 12, mid-day had highlighted that concrete had been filled in around the trees at Court Lane, and the BMC’s garden department had started an inquiry into the issue. This week the K East ward office team and garden department team removed the concrete and filled the space with red soil. However, the BMC has not been able to identify who had filled the concrete in the first place. “The road was recently handed over to the BMC by a private owner. We have started an inquiry about this, but we have not reached a conclusion yet, said an official of the Garden Department. The official added that action would be taken against the culprit as per the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Tree Act, 1975. However, the official said it was unlikely that a BMC contractor had done this. Former corporator Nicholas Almeda, who had raised the issue, asked how it is possible for someone to put concrete around trees on the road without the BMC knowing about it. An audit by the garden department had found that roadside trees had been damaged at some 318 places due to civil work from October last year onwards. Official sources said notices had been sent to various departments responsible.

23 March,2025 07:14 AM IST | Mumbai | Samiullah KhanMumbai University’s Senate on Saturday approved a budget outlay of R968.17 crore for the financial year 2025–26, marking a 9.52 per cent increase from the previous year’s R884 crore. The session, however, was marred by high drama, protests, sloganeering and a sit-in demonstration by members of the Yuva Sena (UBT) and the Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU). Despite this, the budget was passed by a majority vote. The annual budget session, held at the Sir Cowasjee Jehangir Convocation Hall on the university’s Fort campus, witnessed heightened security as chaos unfolded during the proceedings. Protesting members disrupted the session for over two hours, staging a sit-in in the well of the house. They alleged procedural violations, claiming the budget had neither been formally discussed nor approved in the university’s Management Council (MC) meeting, as required. This year, the budget session was held with full strength of senate including the elected member of teachers and graduate constituency after a gap of two years owing to delay in elections. Dispute sparks outrage Sheetal Devrukhkar-Sheth, a Senate member from the Yuva Sena, raised a point of order before the budget presentation, stating: “Since the passing of the budget was not explicitly listed on the Management Council meeting agenda held on March 12, it was not discussed, and therefore should not be presented before the Senate.” This led to a sit-in protest by Yuva Sena and BUCTU members, which continued until the end of the session. The disruption forced the meeting to be adjourned for 15 minutes after lunch. Ahead of the session, Yuva Sena members also staged a protest outside the varsity’s Fort campus, waving placards and raising issues such as incomplete infrastructure, errors in evaluation, and spelling mistakes on students’ marksheets. University denies allegations University officials, however, maintained that due process was followed. Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ajay Bhamare clarified: “The minutes of the previous Management Council meeting were included in the agenda, and the budget was part of those minutes. Therefore, the discussion did take place.” Several MC members present during the Senate meeting supported this claim, and amid the ongoing protest, the budget was presented and passed within minutes, as demanded by the remaining Senate members. Governor-nominated Senate member Dhanesh Sawant criticised the conduct of the protesting members. “Those disrupting the decorum of the house and ignoring the Vice-Chancellor’s repeated requests to maintain discipline are doing so for vested interests,” he said. He and other members demanded action against the 18 Senate members (10 from Yuva Sena and 8 from BUCTU) who participated in the protest. Yuva Sena leader and Management Council member Pradeep Sawant questioned the university’s transparency. “As per regulations, MC members must be given the budget draft at least seven days in advance. This year, it was shared just a day before the meeting, leaving no time for meaningful discussion. Moreover, the Senate agenda made no mention of the budget,” he stated, adding, “We submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor demanding the matter be brought to the attention of the Governor.” Budget highlights and financials The approved budget includes several initiatives focused on academic excellence, inclusivity, research, and global outreach. Key allocations include:Quality, Inclusivity, and Excellence (Academics) Rs 10croreGovernance Reforms under Quality Initiatives Rs 35 croreResearch and Innovation Culture Rs 15 croreStudent Support and Progression Rs 5 croreAlumni Connect & University-Industry Linkages Rs 5 croreInternationalisation and Global Citizenship Education Rs 5 croreAs per the budget document, the number of affiliated colleges has increased from 743 in 2015–16 to 914 in 2024–25 an 18.71% rise. The revised estimate for 2024-25 shows a deficit of R82.60 crore, down from the original R121.60 crore. However, the net deficit for the 2025–26 estimate is projected at Rs 147.63 cr

The Western Railway played public announcements throughout the day. Organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Earth Hour is a global movement involving people and communities to take action on environmental issues and protect the planet. It is followed annually on March 22. “The Central Railway (CR) observed the Earth Hour Day at the Mumbai headquarters and all its five divisions as a symbol of commitment to planet Earth. All non-essential lights on Central Railway were switched off between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm as part of Earth Hour Day or '60 Earth Hour' symbolising giving an hour or 60 minutes for planet Earth. Mumbai Traffic Police impose temporary parking restrictions on St Andrews Road in Bandra In a bid to tackle persistent traffic congestion and safety concerns, the Mumbai Traffic Police have announced a temporary no-parking restriction on both sides of St Andrews Road in Bandra. The restriction, which comes into effect from Sunday, will remain in force until June 22. It aims to streamline traffic flow and ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially school students and local residents. "Following temporary traffic arrangement will remain in force from 00.01 hrs dated 23/03/2025 to 22/06/2025 for 24.00 hrs," Samadhan Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (HQ & Central) Traffic, Mumbai, said. The decision follows a comprehensive review by the Bandra Traffic Division, which found that parking on both sides of the 15-meter-wide one-way road—stretching from Peri Cross Road to A-One Bakery Junction—was a major cause of obstruction and delays. Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ & Central) Samadhan Pawar, exercising powers under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, issued the directive under a government notification. "The ongoing traffic congestion and safety concerns associated with vehicle parking on both sides of St. Andrews Road, which is 15 meters wide and designated as a one-way thoroughfare travelling from north to south, the Bandra Traffic Division has conducted a thorough review of the situation. To alleviate the inconvenience faced by local residents, drivers, and school students, and to ensure the smooth and speedy movement of traffic, we have concluded that it is essential to temporarily impose restrictions on vehicle parking along St. Andrews Road," Pawar said. As per the order, parking will be strictly prohibited for all types of vehicles along the designated stretch for 24 hours a day throughout the enforcement period. The primary objective of this measure is to prevent traffic congestion, reduce safety hazards, and improve road conditions for residents, commuters, and students. Authorities have urged motorists to adhere to the new regulations to avoid fines and ensure smoother traffic movement. The Mumbai Traffic Police will deploy personnel to monitor compliance and enforce the rule effectively. Local residents and daily commuters are advised to use alternative parking arrangements during this period. For further updates, motorists can check official Mumbai Traffic Police notifications.
