The heavy rain that lashed Mumbai and the suburbs on Sunday is expected to continue over the next few days in the city as well as its neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the island city is most likely to receive heavy to heavy rainfall at isolated places, and has issued a yellow alert for the next 48 hours (Monday and Tuesday), while Thane and Palghar have been put on orange alerts.

IMD has also issued orange alerts for other districts in the state such as Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune, Kolhapur and Satara. Speaking to mid-day, an IMD official said, "There are two low-pressure areas that have formed: one is over the Bay of Bengal while the other is over Gujarat and Rajasthan regions. These two systems will affect the weather over entire Maharashtra including Konkan, north madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha regions. We are expecting heavy to very rainfall at isolated places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall in some parts of the Konkan as well as in the ghat areas of north madhya Maharashtra.”

The official also said that the current weather system will cross Madhya Pradesh and then reach Gujarat on Tuesday, after which it is likely to weaken. “The last few days of heavy rainfall in the state are because the weather systems are forming one after another; while some weaken, others become active.”
