Aurangzeb's glorification will not be allowed: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday said whether people like Mughal emperor Aurangzeb or not, his tomb is a protected monument, but his glorification will not be allowed, reported news agency PTI. Talking to reporters in Nagpur, Fadnavis said structures "outside the purview of law" should be removed. "Whether we like Aurangzeb or not, his tomb is a protected monument. We will not allow anyone to glorify him," he said, reported PTI. Right-wing organisations have been demanding the removal of the 17th-century Mughal ruler's tomb at Khultabad town in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Rumours about a "chadar" with holy inscriptions being burnt during protests led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) seeking the removal of the tomb triggered violence in Nagpur earlier this month. Fadnavis further dismissed Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's remarks in an article criticising the New Education Policy 2020, claiming that the Centre was using it to communalise education. "We are Indianising education. The British introduced an education system aimed at making Indians their subordinates. There should be no opposition to Indianising education. Any patriot would support it. Sonia Gandhi should gather proper information and support this initiative," he said, reported PTI. He cited a letter by British historian T B Macaulay that stated that unless the then education system was changed, the British would not be able to rule the country. Asked about the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) demanding the use of Marathi in banks, the chief minister said the language should be used wherever expected, and there is nothing wrong with it. He, however, urged that no one should take the law into their hands. The chief minister said that the government has undertaken some missions for the 2027 Kumbh Mela at Nashik and the cleanliness of rivers. "We have undertaken some missions, but these works take time. Effluents from municipal corporations, councils, towns, and industries must be treated before being released into rivers. We support the setting up of treatment plants. When the Kumbh Mela begins, clean water will be available for the holy dip," he said, reported PTI. Fadnavis said power tariffs will be reduced step by step over the next five years. "The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has accepted petitions, and there is a difference of opinion between MERC and the state government on calculation methods. A revised petition will be submitted to remove confusion. People will get cheaper power, and the distribution company, which is currently under Rs 70,000 crore to Rs 80,000 crore debt, will be debt-free in the next four to five years." Mediclaim policy amount can't be deducted from medical expenses compensation: HC

A sum received by a person under a mediclaim policy cannot be deducted from the compensation amount payable to the claimant for medical expenses under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, the Bombay High Court has said, reported news agency PTI. The amount under a mediclaim policy is received in view of a contract entered into by the claimant with the insurance company, a full bench of Justices A S Chandurkar, Milind Jadhav and Gauri Godse said in its judgement on March 28. "In our view, the deduction of any amount received by a claimant under a Mediclaim policy would not be permissible," the bench ruled, reported PTI. The issue was referred to the full bench after various single and division benches had different views on the same. The full bench, while referring to judgments passed by the Supreme Court, said the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal was not only empowered but also duty-bound to award just compensation. It said the amount received on account of insurance is due to the contractual obligations entered into by the insured with the company. Having paid the premium, it was clear that the beneficial amount would accrue to the share of the claimant either on maturity of the policy or on death, whatever be the manner of death, the Bombay High Court said, reported PTI. "The tortfeasor (offender) cannot take advantage of the foresight and wise financial investments made by the deceased. This is the settled position of law," the Bombay High Court said, reported PTI. The full bench was hearing an appeal filed by the New India Assurance Co Ltd against a judgment of the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal awarding monetary compensation up and above the medical expenses. The insurance company claimed medical expenses were also covered under the insurance money received as part of the mediclaim policy. The company said this would amount to double compensation. Advocate Gautam Ankhad, appointed as amicus curiae to assist the court, argued that the Motor Vehicles Act provision pertaining to medical expenses needs to be construed in favour of the claimant/victim as it is a welfare legislation, reported PTI. He further said there is no loss caused to the insurer as it received premium from the insured. However, if a deduction is permitted from the medical expenses, then it would result in granting an unjust benefit to the insurer resulting in its unjust enrichment, he said. (With inputs from PTI)

Kalyan railway station's water supply cut temporarily over non-payment of dues

Civic authorities disconnected water supply to Kalyan railway station, a major junction on the Mumbai suburban rail network, for a day over the weekend due to non-payment of dues of Rs 4.41 crore, officials said on Monday, reported news agency PTI. The water supply, discontinued on Saturday evening, was restored on Sunday after the railway authorities initiated the process of payment of the current bill amounting to Rs 1.17 crore, they said. Despite prior notices from the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, the rail authorities failed to clear the outstanding dues, prompting assistant civic commissioner Sachin Tamkhede to disconnect the water supply on Saturday to the Kalyan railway station, located in Thane district, the civic body said in a release, reported PTI. Later, following urgent discussions with the civic body, the railway authorities initiated the process for payment of Rs 1.17 crore, the current bill amount, and assured the KDMC that the remaining dues would be settled soon, it said. KDMC Commissioner Dr Indu Rani Jakhar subsequently directed for the immediate restoration of water supply to the station on Sunday evening, the release said, reported PTI. Tamkhede said a meeting with railway officials will be held next week to discuss the issue of the outstanding dues. The civic body has been conducting a drive to recover property tax and water charges for the financial year 2024-25, with March 31, 2025 set as the deadline. Mahavitaran snaps power supply parts of govt building in Gondia over pending dues State-run power distributor Mahavitaran has disconnected the electricity supply to the common areas of a four-storey building, housing 32 government offices, in Maharashtra's Gondia over Rs 2.65 lakh unpaid dues, an official said on Friday. The affected areas include the lobby, entrance and toilets in the administrative building, which is used by hundreds of employees and citizens daily, the official said. Sub-Divisional Officer Chandrabhan Khandait said the issue arose because many offices weren't regularly contributing to the contingency fund. "However, the offices have now agreed to pay their shares, and we hope to resolve the issue and restore power," he said. (With inputs from PTI)

Maharashtra: Oil tanker falls off Manor bridge, driver killed; fire sparks chaos

A 30-year-old driver, Ashish Kumar Yadav, tragically lost his life in a freak accident when the crude oil-filled tanker he was driving fell off the Manor Bridge at Mastan Naka on Sunday evening. The fully loaded oil tanker came crashing down on the road after demolishing the safety wall of the bridge. The chaotic scene was captured by a CCTV camera; in the footage, people are seen running for safety after they learned that a tanker had crashed into the safety wall on the bridge.  Witnesses were left stunned as they watched the horrific crash unfold. Fortunately, no passersby were injured in the fatal incident, but the spill of oil on the road created a hazardous situation for the road users. The superintendent of Palghar police Balasaheb Patil told mid-day that the driver died on the spot, ‘as he lost control over the vehicle’. The situation worsened when the tanker caught fire after sparks ignited, intensifying the danger for those nearby. “But thankfully a local water tanker, which was passing from the accident site, helped dousing the fire,” said an eyewitness, requesting anonymity. However, Palghar police have booked the driver for rash driving causing a fatal accident. “Yadav has been booked for negligent driving causing a fatal accident. He was heading to Silvasa from Nhava Sheva port,” said inspector Ranvir Bayes, in-charge of Manor police station where an FIR has been registered against the driver. The roads became slippery and unsafe for the users after the accident, as the diesel spilled all over the stretch prompting the authorities to take safety measures including cordoning off the accident site where onlookers gathered to see the tragedy.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis dismisses speculation on PM Modi’s successor

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday put an end to speculation about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s successor, asserting that there is no need for such discussions. Speaking to the media in Nagpur, Fadnavis said, “Modi ji will continue to be the Prime Minister in 2029 as well.” Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut claimed that PM Modi’s visit to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur on Sunday had a hidden agenda. “Discussions held at the RSS headquarters are never made public. However, indications suggest that Modi’s successor will be from Maharashtra,” Raut told reporters in Mumbai. Raut raised the issue of the BJP’s unofficial rule that leaders above 75 years of age should retire from active politics. Since Prime Minister Modi was born on September 17, 1950, he will turn 75 on September 17, 2025, sparking speculation about his political future. Responding swiftly, Fadnavis dismissed such conjecture, saying, “In Hindu culture, as long as the father is alive, no one discusses succession. It is only in Mughal traditions that such matters are debated.” Within the BJP, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is widely considered a frontrunner to succeed Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate. However, last year, during a public address in Chandigarh, Shah himself affirmed that Modi would continue to lead India beyond 2029. Reacting to Raut’s remarks, BJP leader and MLA Atul Bhatkalkar criticised the Sena (UBT) MP for making “mischievous statements.” He added, “Raut should focus on what is happening within his own party, particularly the absence of Aditya Thackeray during legislative sessions, rather than speculating on Modi’s successor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji will continue to lead India in 2029.”

Maharashtra departments told to specify potential rise in expenditure

Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik has issued a directive to all departments mandating that any new proposals presented to the state cabinet must clearly outline the potential increase in expenditure beyond their allocated budget, reported news agency PTI. The directive, issued on Friday, comes amid signs of the state's financial constraints. It has called for transparency in identifying the potential increases in expenditure for any new proposal, thus holding departments accountable for their financial commitments. The directive stresses that no proposals should be submitted to the cabinet without specifying how much the department's expenditure may exceed its original allocation, reported PTI. To rein in the unnecessary spending, departments have also been instructed to limit unproductive expenditure, consolidate redundant government schemes, and curb free-of-cost services wherever possible, an official said. The directive encourages reducing non-productive spending, merging redundant schemes and focusing on increasing productive capital expenditure. This is part of the state's broader strategy to rein in its fiscal deficits and ensure that essential schemes are not undermined by excessive borrowing and unsustainable spending practices, the official said, reported PTI. Notably, state Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar last week advised farmers to pay their crop loan instalments on time rather than awaiting a loan waiver announcement, citing the state's current financial constraints, reported PTI. Later, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde also called for maintaining balance in the state finances, adding that funds should be available for welfare schemes, development, and employees' salaries. He had also said the monthly aid for women under the Ladki Bahin scheme, which is believed to have played a key role in the BJP-led Mahayuti's win the the 2024 state polls, will be raised from the current Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100 after the state's financial condition is strengthened, reported PTI. While the government has allocated Rs 36,000 crore for the Ladki Bahin scheme in the budget, it made no mention of the hike in the allowance from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,100 in the beneficiaries, as promised by the ruling Mahayuti before the assembly elections last year. In the more than Rs 7,00,020 crore state budget for the fiscal 2025-26 presented by Pawar earlier this month, the government projected a revenue deficit of Rs 45,891 crore and a fiscal deficit of more than Rs 1,36,000 crore, reported PTI. The revenue receipts are expected to be more than Rs 5,60,000 crore. Pawar had said the government has been successful in keeping the fiscal deficit below 3 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GDSP), and the state's revenue deficit has been consistently less than 1 per cent of the gross state income. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) National Spokesperson Waris Pathan has called on the Maharashtra government to impose strict Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) laws against those responsible for the explosion at a mosque in Beed, urging severe punishment for the accused, reported news agency ANI. Speaking to ANI, Pathan said, "Who encourages them? They get encouraged by the hate speeches that the BJP leaders give every day. The government should impose strict UAPA laws against the accused in this case, their case should be heard in fast-track court and they should get severe punishment. Those BJP leaders who keep talking such nonsense every day should also be punished. Only then will we be able to prevent such incidents from happening in the future." A blast occurred at a mosque in Beed, Maharashtra, on Sunday, causing significant damage to the internal structure of the mosque. Two accused have been arrested in connection with a blast at a mosque in Maharashtra's Beed, police officials confirmed to ANI on Sunday. The police added that they received the information that the accused went to the mosque and carried out the explosion with the help of gelatin. Superintendent of Police (SP) Navneet Kanwat said in a video statement that the village sarpanch informed the police about the incident at about 4 am. "All our senior officers and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) team reached the spot. We got information that the accused had gone to the mosque and carried out the explosion with the help of gelatin. When our team reached there and started an investigation, we learned about two accused, and before 6 am, we arrested both the accused," SP Kanwat told ANI. He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and urged people to maintain peace. "A village-level peace committee meeting was also organized after this incident. We have assured everyone that a thorough investigation will be done in this case so that the accused can get the harshest punishment. I would like to appeal to everyone to maintain peace," SP Kanwat added. Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said police officials had received information about the explosion at a mosque in Beed's Ardhamsla village, which occurred a day ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Speaking on the incident, CM Fadnavis told reporters, "The information has been received; the information about who did it has also been received. The concerned Superintendent of Police (SP) will provide further details." (With inputs from ANI)

Mumbai’s new elevated nature trail opens at Kamala Nehru Park in Malabar Hill

On Sunday morning, it was all about putting your two best feet forward as a highly anticipated forest walkway/elevated nature trail opened at Kamala Nehru Park, Malabar Hill. This walkway, which stands opposite the Malabar Hill Club (formerly WIAA club), next to Siri Road was inaugurated amidst cheers at 9.30 am. As architect Rahul Kadri was being congratulated, several top Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials arrived along with Mangal Prabhat Lodha, guardian minister of Mumbai Suburban District and BMC chief Bhushan Gagrani. Cries of ‘Morya re’ rent the air as the walkway was declared officially ‘open’ and then, the bigwigs were off on the walkway, cameras keeping pace. Trail ‘n’ hearty at the forest walk on Sunday morning. Pic/Atul Kamble Salient featuresThis elevated nature trail at the park is 485 m in length and the width of the walkway is 2.4 m and 5.4 m. It has two emergency exits, one at Kamala Nehru Park and the other at the Babulnath steps. Gagrani who was enjoying the trail said, “Maintenance is key. The walkway is very strong, yet we have restricted persons to 200 at one time as a precaution. While we will have personnel to clean up, people need to ensure cleanliness too. Foodstuff is not allowed on the trail.” Educational aspectThe first sound on the walkway though, was that of the birds chirping. That sound was at once audible amidst the conversations of the walkers, as one group went through the turnstiles and others awaited their turn. It was evident that birds are the chirpy cheerleaders of the biodiversity spot.  There is an educational aspect with several small boards explaining what walkers may expect on the trail. One small marker explained about the ‘Indian Grey Hornbill’ and the features of the bird. There was a quick learning lesson about the ‘Bark Gecko’, which one learnt is: ‘a nocturnal gecko with rough, bark-like skin that helps in camouflage’.  Speakers and listeners at the PDP Citizen Dialogue initiative. Pic/Sayyed Sameer Abedi LocalSpeakSanjay Shirke, a former Malabar Hill local who was on the trail, said, “The walkway will bring people closer to nature. We must ensure it is secure, since the trail winds its way for a distance inside. It may be a good idea to look at some special discount for senior citizens.” Currently, the ticket price is Rs 25. Area resident Geeta Bhatia who was near the ticket counter was excited. She said smiling, “This is a tremendous job. We need greenery. We have to connect with nature. This walkway gives us an avenue to do so.”  Ashish C Shah, who also experienced the walkway, said, “I am here with others and all of us could not believe we are in India. Experience going overseas without a passport,” he said with a laugh, adding, “People too must play their part in maintenance by ensuring cleanliness.” Even as one left the venue, it was evident that the trail is where the shrill trill of the stressful mobile can be replaced by the sweet sound of birdsong. The greensThe Malabar Hill area is singing the green song loud and clear. Earlier on Sunday morning, before the walkway inauguration, a Shantivan Rock Garden was also declared open in the vicinity near Godrej Baug, Malabar Hill. On Saturday, March 29, morning, the stunning Priyadarshini Park,  known by the acronym, ‘PDP’, played host to a programme called ‘Citizen Dialogue’, an interactive meeting to address pollution concerns and greening initiatives for South Mumbai specifically. The special guests were Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora and Siddhesh Kadam, chairman, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Susieben Shah, general secretary, PDP, said to her audience comprising primarily people from the area, “One needs to be part of the system to bring about change. We need to engage continually with politicians and policy-makers,” explained Shah, who is with the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde). The meet marked the launch of an umbrella organisation called ‘South Mumbai Residents Association’ (SMRA). Deora said, “Air Quality Index [AQI] is the burning issue of today. The AQI is now on the radar of the Mumbaikar too. More interactive meetings under the SMRA umbrella are key.” Kadam said, “Born and brought up here, I know what Mumbai is facing. Where there is development, there is pollution. We do want development but balance is critical. There is that thin line which we can demarcate at meetings.” 485 metresLength of the walkway 5 am - 9 pm Elevated nature trail timings Rs 25 Ticket price for Indian citizens Rs 100 Ticket price for foreigners Rs 25Ticket price for Indian citizens Walkway wise . Motorists raising hell on yet-to-open stretch of Samruddhi Highway

The Igatpuri-Amane section of the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway—commonly known as the Samruddhi Mahamarg, which was expected to be thrown open to traffic in March, is allegedly being used by motorists before being inaugurated, raising concerns about safety as crash barrier work is still underway. Locals have accused the authorities of turning a blind eye to offenders.  According to sources, some motorists are risking their lives by speeding on the 76-km unopened stretch and even using the two tunnels between Amane and Shahapur which are unlit. A Bhiwandi resident alleged that local villagers, motorists, bikers, autorickshaws drivers and even government vehicles are plying the stretch. Motorists on the Samruddhi Maharmarg section between Igatpuri and Amane, which is yet to be opened. Pics/Sources  “A villager from Shahapur shared pictures of vehicles illegally travelling from Amane to Igatpuri and back via the Samruddhi Mahamarg, even when the section is yet to be opened. Are MSRDC [Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation] officials and the highway traffic police waiting for a disaster to happen,” asked the resident. Clinching evidencePictures and videos shared by the resident with this newspaper revealed that not only private four-wheelers but also small goods vehicles, autorickshaw and two-wheelers are using stretch. In one clip, motorist could be seen speeding while the installation of crash barriers on the median of the highway was in progress.A Shahapur resident said, “Two north-bound tunnels are being used by private motorists, bikers and goods vehicles. The MSRDC should immediately restrict private vehicles, including two-wheelers, from using the stretch as who will be held responsible if accidents take place?” A source also forwarded mid-day a picture of a black SUV on the unopened stretch. On looking up information based on the number plate, we learnt that the vehicle is registered in the name of a sitting MLA and cabinet minister.  However, it is not known whether the minister or his family members were inside the car when the source clicked the picture. This newspaper tried to contact the MSRDC and the Maharashra Highway Traffic Police , but they were unavailable for comment by press time. Accidents on expresswayAccording to the Maharashtra State Highway Security Police’s data, over 200 people have died while over 1750 have been injured on the expressway, officially known as the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, between December 11, 2022 and September 2024. The authorities have been taking several measures to decrease the accidents on the road such as random examining of the tyre health of vehicles, checking the air pressure in tyres, installing multi-coloured flags along the expressway, building restrooms and break points and creating awareness about road hypnosis. About the MahamargThe Samruddhi Mahamarg, which was partially opened in December 2022, is an important infrastructure project linking Maharashtra’s economic and agricultural hubs. The 701-km expressway passes through three varied habitat types, starting from the dry deciduous forests near Nagpur, grasslands in the middle section, and the Western Ghats near Mumbai. At present, motorists headed towards Nagpur have to travel up to Igatpuri via the old Mumbai-Nashik highway to get on to the Samruddhi Mahamarg and go towards Nagpur. MSRDC officials had told mid-day that the work of the carriageway on the Mumbai end, connecting the expressway with the old Mumbai-Nashik highway was progressing at a fast pace. There are five tunnels and 16 bridges on the last stretch of the expressway and because of the difficult terrain, carrying out construction work there was challenging. Motorists using the Igatpuri-Amane section will be able to avoid Kasara ghat and the traffic on the old Mumbai-Nashik highway.  200No. of deaths on Samruddhi since Dec 11, 2022 701 KMLength of Samruddhi Mahamarg
