Finally, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road will be opened to traffic this week

Mumbai: The world's most-delayed road project, the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR), that will connect Eastern Express Highway at Amar Mahal Junction to the Western Express Highway at Santacruz, will be thrown open to vehicular traffic this week.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will also throw open the Amar Mahal Junction flyover, making commute easier for thousands of motorists.

It should be noted that Mid DAY had reported how the project was ready but the Congress-headed MMRDA was keen on opening it a few weeks before elections so that the Congress-NCP combine can earn brownie points.

In a press release, MMRDA has claimed that while the construction of Santacruz-Chembur Link Road has been completed, the construction of the Amar Mahal Junction Flyover is scheduled to be completed by this week. The authority has decided to open both the projects simultaneously to avoid any kind of traffic hold up between SCLR and Amar Mahal Junction. Amar Mahal Junction connects five major roads with the Eastern Express Highway and huge traffic flow is witnessed through the area every day.

The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road and the Amar Mahal junction flyover are aimed at easing traffic snarls at Amar Mahal, Sion and Kalanagar junctions and in Kurla area. The projects will also de-congest the Eastern and Western Express Highways. This will enable commuters travel from Santacruz to Chembur in a mere 15-20 minutes.

Presently, Mumbaikars require anywhere between 60 to 90 minutes to cross this stretch during peak hours.
