A 40-year-old woman residing in Navi Mumbai has been defrauded of Rs 1.92 crore in an online share trading scheme, leading to the registration of a case against nine individuals by the police in the city, reported PTI.

The PTI report quoted officials saying that the accused persuaded the victim who is a resident of New Panvel to dabble with online share trading by promising handsome returns on her investments.

Since December 2023, the victim has transferred a total of Rs 1,92,82,837 into various bank accounts as instructed by the suspects. However, she later learned that she could not take any funds from her assets, indicating fraudulent conduct, the report added.

Senior Inspector Gajanan Kadam of the Cyber Police Station told the news agency that, despite the victim's attempts to obtain clarity from the accused, she received no appropriate response. She subsequently filed a formal complaint with the police.

Invoking provisions of the Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 34 (common intention), the police launched legal procedures against the nine persons on Tuesday, the report added.

Meanwhile, in another case from Thane, a 27-year-old bus attendant of a private vehicle was arrested on charges of sexually harassing students during their excursion.

According to a report in PTI, the officials said that the incident happened on February 20 when the students from a private school in Thane city had gone to a theme park in the Ghatkopar area in the private bus.

An official told PTI that the bus attendant touched some girls and boys inappropriately on the pretext of serving them snacks.

"During the journey, the accused touched some girls as well as boys inappropriately on the pretext of serving them snacks. Following this, some students objected and later told their parents about it. After that, they approached the police and filed a complaint," JP Patil of Kapurbawdi police told PTI.

He stated that he was later arrested and that a case had been filed against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 354A (sexual harassment), and 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
