13 March,2025 10:16 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe Bombay High Court has asked why a First Information Report (FIR) could not be lodged once it came to fore that five policemen were responsible for the death of an accused in Badlapur sexual assault case. The Maharashtra government, on the other side, asserted it was already investigating the incident as an accidental death case. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale on Thursday reserved its order on the issue of whether an FIR ought to be lodged by the government, pursuant to an inquiry report submitted by a magistrate holding five policemen responsible for the death of the accused while in custody. Senior counsel Amit Desai, appearing for the government, said the state is already carrying out an independent investigation, and that the government has also set up a commission under a retired Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court for a probe into the incident. The accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case, Akshay Shinde, was allegedly killed in a police shoot out in September last year, when he was being taken to Kalyan in Maharashtra's Thane district from the Taloja prison in Navi Mumbai. He was arrested in August 2024 for allegedly sexually assaulting two minor girls inside the washroom of a school in Badlapur town of Thane district. He was an attendant at the school. On September 23, 2024, he was killed in the alleged police shootout while being taken from the Taloja prison for questioning. The escorting police team members claimed they shot at the accused in self-defence after he snatched a gun of one of them and opened fire. Under provisions of the law which mandates a judicial probe into cases of custodial death, a magistrate conducted an inquiry and submitted the report to the HC. In the report, the magistrate had said there was substance in the allegations made by the accused's father that it was a fake encounter, and also raised suspicion on the policemen's claims of self-defence. The report had held five policemen responsible for the death of the accused. Desai argued that after the incident, an accidental death report was lodged and the state Crime Investigation Department (CID) was conducting its investigation into Shinde's death. The court then asked if an investigation could be carried out only on the basis of an accidental death report (ADR). "We are concerned about the registration of FIR. Where is that? Is the ADR an FIR? We understand that initially ADR is lodged, but when subsequently it comes to fore that it was not an accidental or natural death but a homicidal death, shouldn't a FIR be lodged?" the bench queried. The HC further asked what the CID proposes to do once its investigation is completed. "Once the investigation is over, the CID will file its final report as per provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code. It could either be a closure report or a prosecution report (chargesheet)," Desai said. Senior advocate Manjula Rao, appointed by the court for assistance, said once the magistrate report has been submitted stating that it was an unnatural death, an FIR ought to be registered. The police had claimed Akshay Shinde snatched a gun of one of the police personnel in the van, opened fire, and was killed in the retaliatory firing. He was shot at by senior inspector Sanjay Shinde. Assistant police inspector Nilesh More, two constables and the police driver were also present in the van at the time of the shootout. The accused was being taken for questioning in connection with a case lodged against him by his wife. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 13 March,2025 05:19 PM IST | Jalna | mid-day online correspondentA woman was arrested for allegedly honey-trapping a 74-year-old businessman and extorting Rs 18.5 lakh from him, a Mumbai Police official said on Thursday, reported the PTI. The incident came to light after the victim, who is the managing director of a firm dealing in medical disposables, filed a complaint against the 50-year-old woman at Malvani police station on March 7, the official said, as per the PTI. "The victim stays in Delhi with his son after the death of his wife in 2015. He used to travel to Mumbai for business purposes. He came in contact with the woman on May 18, 2023. She had introduced herself as a singer. They went to Lonavala, where they allegedly established a sexual relationship, after which the two kept in touch through phone and videocalls," the official said, according to the PTI. "On June 1, 2023, she demanded Rs 12.50 lakh to rent a studio, which the victim transferred through RTGS. On July 7 that year, the woman went to New Delhi to appear before the Patiala House court, where she met the businessman. Some days later, she sought Rs 4 lakh for a house. She then demanded Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh on two occasions," he said, as per the PTI. 13 March,2025 04:53 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentSamajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi has been cautioned by a Mumbai court to exercise restraint during interviews as any 'irresponsible' statement by a senior politician like him can spark riots, reported the PTI. Additional Sessions Judge V G Raghuwanshi schooled Abu Azmi while granting him anticipatory bail on Tuesday in a case filed against the SP legislator for his remarks praising Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, according to the PTI. The offence concerns some statements made during an interview and it means police do not need custody for seizure of any article or interrogation, the court said in the order, a copy of which was made available on Thursday. Noting that Abu Azmi is a politician and businessman and it was improbable that he would run away from the course of justice, the judge said it was a 'fit case to exercise discretion' in his favour. "Before parting with the order I would like to caution the applicant (Azmi) to exercise restraint on himself while giving interviews, having regards to prevailing circumstances. Any irresponsible statement can flare riots and create law and order problems," the court said, the news agency reported. "I hope the applicant, being a senior politician, will understand his responsibility," it added. The case was registered last week against the MLA, who represents the Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar constituency in the metropolis, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) over his remarks eulogising the medieval-era Mughal emperor. He was booked under BNS sections 299 (deliberate and malicious act insulting the religious beliefs of any group of people), 302 (hurting someone's religious feelings) and 356(2) (defamation). Abu Azmi, who is also the Samajwadi Party's Maharashtra unit president, had said while talking to the media that during Aurangzeb's reign, India's borders reached Afghanistan and Burma (Myanmar). "Our GDP (gross domestic product) accounted for 24 per cent (of world GDP) and India was called a golden sparrow," the opposition legislator had claimed. Asked about the fight between Aurangzeb and Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Azmi had termed it a political battle. The remarks were made in the backdrop of the blockbuster Hindi film 'Chhaava', based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was captured by Aurangzeb's commander in 1689. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his father, legendary Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, are highly revered figures in Maharashtra. Seeking anticipatory bail, Azmi, who has been suspended from the Maharashtra legislative assembly till March 26, submitted in the court that his statements were made to the press 'spontaneously without any premeditated intention to insult any personality or hurt the religious feelings of any person', reported the PTI. Azmi's lawyer Mubin Solkar had submitted before the court that the FIR did not disclose any offence against the SP legislator. "The allegations didn't show he had made the statements, deliberately and with malicious intentions of outraging religious sentiments," Solkar had argued. The prosecution had opposed his plea, saying that after the release of a movie, religious sentiments of people are volatile and in such circumstances the applicant made controversial statements in his interview. After hearing both sides, the court said that the investigation was at the primary stage and 'therefore it will not be fair to comment upon the interview given by the applicant'. Further, the judge said that he was surprised to hear that the investigating officer did not have the video recording of the alleged interview till ¿today¿ and he registered an offence without watching it. 13 March,2025 04:04 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentPolice in Maharashtra's Palghar district have successfully busted a notorious bag-lifting gang and apprehended one of its key members in connection with the theft of cash and valuables worth Rs 8 lakh at a wedding function, officials said on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as Vilaskumar Ramjilal Sisodia (34), also known as Sati, was arrested following an extensive investigation that spanned across multiple states. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Jayant Bajbale, the theft occurred last month during a wedding in Palghar's Virar area. A bag containing cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh, belonging to the bride’s family, was reported stolen from the wedding venue. After the incident, the police launched a thorough probe, analysing various leads and reviewing CCTV footage from the venue and surrounding areas. During the investigation, police uncovered that the gang was operating systematically, often using minors to carry out the thefts. The involvement of children allowed the gang to evade suspicion and execute the thefts more effectively in crowded places, including weddings and other social gatherings. "The evidence gathered from CCTV footage and witness statements suggested that the theft was part of a larger organised crime operation involving bag-lifting gangs active in the region," Bajbale said, according to PTI reports. Further investigation revealed that the members of the gang were from the Kadia, Ghulkedi, and Hulkhedi areas of Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh. Acting on this information, a special team from Bolinj police station in Palghar was dispatched to Madhya Pradesh. The police team stayed in Rajgarh for 11 days, conducting a detailed search and questioning locals to track down the suspects. Their efforts led to the arrest of Vilaskumar Ramjilal Sisodia, a key figure in the gang. Sisodia was found in possession of Rs 7.9 lakh in cash, which was recovered during the operation. The police have not yet disclosed the exact date of his arrest, but confirmed that the recovery of the stolen amount was a significant breakthrough in the case. According to PTI reports, authorities believe that the gang is part of a larger network involved in thefts across multiple states. Police suspect that more members of the gang are still at large and are conducting further investigations to apprehend them. "This arrest marks a major step in dismantling the operations of this gang. We are continuing to track down other suspects and uncover the full extent of their criminal activities," Bajbale said. The police are also investigating the role of minors in the thefts and exploring whether any organised child trafficking or exploitation networks are linked to the gang’s operations. Bag-lifting gangs have been known to target crowded events such as weddings, festivals, and markets, where they can blend into the crowd and carry out thefts unnoticed. The involvement of minors adds an additional layer of complexity, making it harder for law enforcement to detect and apprehend the culprits immediately. (With inputs from PTI)
13 March,2025 11:11 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentMumbai police have identified Gularbhoj, a village in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar district, as a rising hotspot for criminal activities. Drawing parallels with Jamtara—infamous for cyber fraud—the police say Gularbhoj is now a breeding ground for a new kind of deception: the ‘Bol Bachchan’ gang. According to Assistant Police Inspector (API) Sunil Karande of Mulund Police Station, who is investigating a case involving the gang, the criminals operate in groups of four to five, preying on unsuspecting women in public places. “These men, aged between 30 and 40, approach women on the streets with remarkable confidence. They introduce themselves as religious men from places like Haridwar or Varanasi and start conversations about the women’s personal problems. By gaining their trust, they eventually steal gold jewellery and valuables before fleeing on their bikes,” said Karande. The first FIR was registered on December 17, 2024, by a woman, prompting police to launch an investigation. As the suspects remained unidentified, another case surfaced on January 10, followed by a third on January 31. Soon after, FIRs with a similar modus operandi were registered at Ghatkopar, Tilak Nagar, and Dharavi police stations in Mumbai. The Mulund police team began their probe by analysing CCTV footage. “We scanned footage from over 70 CCTV cameras and spotted the culprits riding their bikes, but there was no immediate lead to track them down,” said a police official involved in the investigation. The gang was seen moving across several locations, including Shindewadi Court in Dadar, Dharavi, Hindmata Junction, Kamgar Hospital in Mulund, Khabutar Khana in Matunga, Savitribai Phule Nagar in Ghatkopar, entry number 10 of Sion Hospital, Devidayal Road at LBS Road, and finally, Bandra Railway Station near the Parcel Booking Office. “The Parcel Booking Office proved to be our breakthrough,” said Assistant Police Inspector (API) Sunil Karande. “We obtained a vehicle registration number and, with details from the Railways, discovered that the gang was shipping their bike to Uttarakhand.” Team sent to Gularbhoj A few days later, a team was sent to Gularbhoj, where, with the assistance of Gadarpur police, they entered the village and successfully arrested six suspects. The accused arrested by the Mulund Police have been identified as Irfan Sheikh, 25, Firoz Khairuddin, 42, Naushad Hassan, 28, Jallauddin Shah, 45, Firaq Shah, 33, and Ayub Hassan, 26. Investigations have revealed that the arrested individuals have cases registered against them not only in Mumbai and the MMR region but also with the police in Rajasthan and Haryana. “Gularbhoj is, located at a dead end near a dam. People sit along the boundaries as ‘lookouts,’ keeping watch for any outsiders. The moment they spot a non-local, they become highly alert. Even the local police hesitate to enter the village due to the risk of unprovoked attacks,” said a Police official. Recently, a team from Dharavi Police Station attempted to arrest four to five suspects in the village. However, by the time they arrived, the locals had been alerted, leading to an attack on the officers, forcing them to abort the mission. “It’s the new Jamtara—only instead of cyber crimes, this village is producing criminals for Bol Bachchan gang robberies,” said API Sunil Karande. He explained that the stolen gold and valuables from across India are sold at local gold shops for minimal cuts. “The accused selling the stolen gold receive only 20-40 per cent of its market value, yet they are content with that. During interrogation, one of the accused admitted that with just 20 per cent, they can sustain themselves for a month or two. Once the money runs out, they plan their next target.” Karande further stated that the gang has no geographical limitations. “The entire country is their field, which is why citizens should remain vigilant if approached by strangers trying to initiate vague conversations,” he said. 6No. of suspects arrested
13 March,2025 07:59 AM IST | Mumbai | Aishwarya IyerIndrani Mukerjea, a prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, on Wednesday made a submission in a special court seeking clarity from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on whether her daughter, Vidhi Mukerjea, has been dropped as a witness in the case, so that she could meet her. The request made through her lawyer came a day after the CBI submitted a list of 69 witnesses, which did not include Vidhi's name. The murder of Sheena Bora, Indrani’s daughter from an earlier relationship, was allegedly carried out in April 2012. The crime investigation agency asserted its commitment to a speedy trial but did not directly address the status of Vidhi, the daughter of Indrani and her former husband and co-accused Sanjeev Khana, as a witness. The prosecution is expected to present its submissions on Thursday. Though the list didn’t mention Vidhi, the CBI said, “These witnesses will be examined on priority basis and other prosecution witnesses may be examined only when there would be need to keep in view the testimony of aforesaid witnesses”. In 2022, when Vidhi had sought permission to meet her mother, the CBI opposed the plea, stating that she was an important witness and that her testimony had yet to be recorded. At the time, the special court had rejected Vidhi’s plea, citing Indrani’s bail conditions, which prohibited contact with witnesses yet to be examined. Indrani's lawyer, Ranjeet Sangle, told the court that the CBI was not clarifying whether Vidhi will be made a witness or not. “I [Indrani] have not been able to meet my daughter, who wants to stay with me and take care of me. I am unable to meet her. Let me know if Vidhi is going to be examined, so I can meet her,” Indrani stated in her submission through lawyer. “I will die without being able to meet my daughter... this is causing great prejudice to us and inconvenience to the court,” she added.
