A theatre group is celebrating the genius of the playwright on his 13th death anniversary with virtual talks, readings and performances
A pre-pandemic edition of Te Diwas
Vijay Tendulkar has given me a reason to be in the world of theatre. It was only after I started watching and reading his plays, that I got motivated to take up the art form,” shares Malad-based Pritesh Sodha, who runs the theatre company Utopia Comm’unique’ations. And born out of this love and respect for the theatre icon is Te Diwas — an evening to remember the Padma Bhushan playwright — which Sodha and his colleague, Sameer Garud, have been organising for the past decade on his death anniversary.

The first online version of the tribute, to be held today, will comprise talks, readings and performances from Tendulkar’s iconic plays, put together by Marathi and Gujarati actors from across Mumbai, Surat and Jamnagar. This includes a rendition of Ganesh Vandana from the play Ghashiram Kotwal, monologues from Sakharam Binder, Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe, Massage and Kanyadaan, among others, as well as a reading of Azgar Ani Gandharva.

“Last year, we weren’t able to put up a show because of the pandemic. I’m very grateful that the actors responded and decided to do this in a short time. Everyone has recorded their pieces and sent them to me, and I’m putting them together for the pre-recorded tribute,” he explains.
