Catch Abhanga Repost, known for keeping the words of Maharashtra’s saints alive through their music, at their 100th gig tonight

Abhanga Repost -- a contemporary folk/fusion group that showcases the poetry of Sant Tukaram and Sant Eknath -- achieved what many other groups have failed to do. The two-year-old band will be playing their 100th gig tonight.
"The band started out as a way of reminding youth of our forgotten history and rich poetry, written hundreds of years ago by the saints. We didn't expect such a huge response," admits percussionist Viraj Acharya, who is excited to perform the band's new discoveries.
'Abhanga' means verses that cannot be destroyed, and the group added Repost to their name since they rearrange and put tunes to old poems. Their latest gem is a song called Bharud. "It is based on Bharud, a traditional folk form of Maharashtra, written by Sant Eknath. The song is about revolutionaries and people who want to bring about a change," informs the 21-year-old. "We will be introducing another new tune at the gig, which is called Mani Nahi Bhav, written by Sant Tukdoji Maharaj. This song says that if you do not have feelings or emotions in your heart, you are not worshipping the right God."
Because they celebrate Maharashtra's roots and culture, the band is extremely popular during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. "We play the most number of gigs in that one week," says Acharya, adding that the group earned their place through hard work and determination. "We have practised a lot to get where we are today."
Due to their inimitable sound, they have also become popular in the college fest circle. "There have been concerts at educational institutions like Ruia College and KC College," he adds.
Earlier this month, the band signed a deal with Bharatiya Digital Party, a non-political online portal that focuses only on music. On their YouTube channel, Abhanga Repost released a video of their popular song, De Dewache Mandir. "Our next target is playing at pubs. Our music is for everyone to hear, and there is no particular crowd for it," he signs off.
