WeAreTheCity

WeAreTheCity India is an online platform that supports the career development of women through networking, events, articles and interviews. The site aims to bring professional women, female entrepreneurs and the charity sector onto one platform to promote and celebrate the successes of local women in India.

After launching in Mumbai on International Women’s Day on March 8 this year, they are geared for their flagship event to be held today. Titled Polish your Profile and Enhance Your Career, the event will be led by Vanessa Vallely, motivational speaker, author of Heels of Steel and CEO of WeAreTheCity UK and India. At the event, the founders will announce two new co-chairs to run WeAreTheCity India: Jo Gaglani, founder of Sanctum Spa and Wellness and Dimple Luniya, Feng Shui consultant and author.

Women in the city
Speaking about the initiative, Caroline Graham, head to WeAreTheCity India, states, “The (Indian) site was set up to act as a centralised portal for career and lifestyle advice that may be of interest to working women across India. The model for the website is based on the sister website in the UK, www.wearethecity.com. We chose Mumbai for the flagship event because my heart remains in Mumbai, after having worked across India for many years. There is so much to do and see and having worked with a number of women’s groups and organisations, I knew that Mumbai was a perfect place to launch WeAreTheCity.”

WeAreTheCity started in London in 2008. When we quizzed Graham on the timing of this event in Mumbai, she explains, “It is an important time for women in India. There are lots of networking organisations springing up across India. WeAreTheCity wants to be able to share those networks with our members. We want to provide a platform for Indian women to tell their stories and inspire our members.”

With help from sponsors and contributors, they aim to hold various events that focus on career, personal development and lifestyle. WeAreTheCity currently has a presence in Mumbai and Bangalore and are in the process of establishing local committees in Delhi, Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Challenges et al
Graham admits that it is a challenge: “Running WeAreTheCity isn’t easy alongside a full-time day job! There are lots of people to meet and investigative work to be done. The site doesn’t generate any income; it is completely not-for-profit, and relies on sponsorship and funding from the London site." Since their launch, they have gained 500 members. “We are 50% career and 50% lifestyle, so hopefully, we are covering all the needs of today’s working woman. At this event, we will ask the audience on ways to make the site better for them and how can it progress further,” reveals Graham.
