As Kalpana Shah’s Tao Art Gallery celebrates its 14th anniversary, the gallerist sheds light on the ongoing exhibition, Infinite

From art, to infinity

When Tao Art Gallery was about to complete 14 years and gallerist Kalpana Shah was thinking of a theme for an exhibition for the same, the one thought that occurred to her, was of the infiniteness of art. “Often, I have people coming up to me saying they don’t understand art.

But through this exhibition Infinite, I want to give out a message to people that one doesn’t have to be an intellectual or be in a certain bracket to understand art. All you need to do, is to keep your minds open and be aware,” says Shah.

From the artists’ point of view, she wants to keep the sky as the limit when it comes to creativity. “Creativity should not be contained in a box, where only a certain kind of work is art and the rest isn’t. That way, the artists have the freedom to use any medium of expression to convey what they want to say,” she adds.

Unlike many other exhibitions where only a certain kind of artists participate, Shah likes to extend the platform of the anniversary shows to all kinds of artists. “This kind of blend between artists — senior and new — is very welcome. So for instance, I might keep a Raza painting on my window display, but viewers get to see works from new artists as well, which is what makes it really interesting,” Shah adds.

Some of the participating artists comprise Arzan Khambatta, Brinda Miller, Jaideep Mehrotra, Ali Akbar Mehta, Sunil Padwal, Paresh Maity, Prabhakar Kolte, Bharati Pitre, Dhruvi Acharya, Indrajit Prasad, Jayasri Burman, Karl Antao, SH Raza, Sujata Bajaj and Yashwant Deshmukh among others.
