Speaking about re-living the “Yaariyan” with its re-release, Divya said, “The audience gave so much love to Yaariyan when it first released that my heart has been absolutely full. In fact, the re-release is my way of giving back to the audience who embraced it so wholeheartedly. “I remember when I was shooting my second movie, Sanam Re, in Ladakh—in a very secluded place with hardly anyone around—some tourists came by, and a girl walked up to me and told me she had watched Yaariyan 56 times. I was so blown away! That’s the kind of love I received.” She mentioned that during the promotions of "Yaariyan 2," as they visited colleges, Divya could feel the strong sense of nostalgia people had for the original Yaariyan. “My heart has truly been full with all this love. Of course, the film launched me as a director and marked the beginning of my journey in the industry, so I am really grateful to the audience for all their love and support.” Divya added. Divya Khossla was last seen in the thriller "Savi." The film also featured Harshvardhan Rane and Anil Kapoor and was inspired by the legendary tale of Savitri and Satyavan. Feeling the pressure Priyadarshan Priyadarshan, known for his collaborations with Akshay Kumar, is set to direct Hera Pheri 3, which he calls “humour of poverty.” In a recent interview, he admitted that the pressure to reunite for the third instalment became “too much” to ignore. The film will feature the original cast — Akshay, Paresh Rawal and Suniel Shetty. After wrapping up his ongoing project Bhooth Bangla, starring Akshay and Tabu, the filmmaker will reportedly shift his focus to Hera Pheri 3. He plans to start writing the script next year, acknowledging the challenge of meeting expectations. With the characters getting older, he says he must ensure the humour remains “pure and identifiable” without relying on double entendre. The director added that he is taking it up as a challenge, aiming to craft a “believable and entertaining script.” Tough times for newbies Richa Chadha Actor-turned-producer Richa Chadha believes that newcomers in Bollywood face challenges, despite having the added benefit of social media. However, in a recent interview, she stressed that established filmmakers tend to stereotype actors, hindering their growth. She said, “The math of the business doesn’t allow us to take chances. It’s not only limited to actors, but filmmakers too.” She added that even renowned actors want to experiment and take risks, but are held back by the industry’s “safe approach”. Richa also said that Bollywood needs a reinvention, stating, “Innovation is the heart of any industry.” Raiding the dance floor Tamannaah Bhatia and Yo Yo Honey Singh  Tamannaah Bhatia and Yo Yo Honey Singh have been roped in for a special item song in Ajay Devgn’s upcoming film Raid 2 (Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2 team to assemble to film two songs, March 25). Vishesh Bhatt: Awarapan 2 stirs and challenges the core emotions in us

Few would have seen a sequel to Awarapan (2007) coming eighteen years after its release. Producer Vishesh Bhatt threw a curveball when he marked leading man Emraan Hashmi’s birthday last week by announcing Awarapan 2. Pre-production work has begun on the sequel, which will be helmed by Nitin Kakkar of Filmistaan (2012) and Jawaani Jaaneman (2020) fame, and casting is underway. We’ve learnt that the makers plan to take the film on floors by July. Emraan Hashmi and Shriya Saran fronted Awarapan  Think Awarapan sequel, and the first question that comes to one’s mind is whether Hashmi will reprise his role of gangster Shivam Malik. After all, the 2007 movie ended with Shivam dying in a gunfight and reuniting with his love, essayed by Shriya Saran, in the afterlife. But sources tell us that Hashmi’s Shivam will return in the second edition. “The plan is to take the narrative forward because Shivam is a well-known character. While Awarapan was written by Shagufta Rafique from a story by Mahesh Bhatt, the second instalment has been written by Vishesh, Nitin and Bilal Siddiqi. Like the original, this one too will have a love story at its core and a strong dose of action,” reveals a source.   Vishesh Bhatt Over the years, producer Mukesh Bhatt and his filmmaker-son Vishesh have doled out many franchises—from Aashiqui to Raaz and Murder—under their banner. What made them consider taking Awarapan’s story forward after almost two decades? Vishesh says, “Awarapan has lived on in fans’ hearts for years. We always wanted to bring Shivam back, but only if we found a story that did justice to his legacy. Now, we’re finally making its sequel. We had many superhit films to make a sequel of, but we picked Awarapan because it’s an emotional story. The first was a dramatic crime story set in a dark world; the sequel will be an emotional story [rooted in] crime. Awarapan 2 stirs and challenges the core emotions in us, [feelings that are] conflicted and dark. In an era of big-screen entertainers, these are stories that talk about one’s inner conflicts.” While Vishesh is no stranger to direction, he has roped in Kakkar, whose Filmistaan won the National Award, to helm the movie. Explaining his choice, he says, “I don’t attend film parties, but I go to film festivals to watch independent filmmakers’ work. When I saw Filmistaan, I was blown away. Nitin’s courage as a storyteller stayed with me.”

Rajkummar Rao and Vikramaditya Motwane

Rajkummar Rao to front Vikramaditya Motwane's sports biopic

Earlier this week, Vikramaditya Motwane revealed to mid-day that his next is a sports biopic (You don’t have as much autonomy when dealing with OTTs, March 30). Now, we’ve learnt another interesting detail about the film. Industry insiders reveal that the director is in talks with Rajkummar Rao to front the project. If things work out, it will mark their reunion after their critically acclaimed survival thriller, Trapped (2016). A source close to the project shares, “Vikramaditya has been working on a sports film, based on a real-life athlete. It explores a protagonist that is different from the underdog usually seen in sports biopics. Raj liked the core idea. Plus, he knows Vikramaditya will push his creative boundaries.” In the next few months, the actor will be seen in Bhool Chuk Maaf, Maalik, and his maiden production, Toaster. The source adds, “The biopic will be a swift two-month shoot, the kind Vikramaditya is known for. That said, it will be preceded by intense prep of a few months.”

A still from Chhorii 2

Vishal Furia: ‘Bollywood horror films are a sleaze fest’

Not everyone has an appetite for horror, but Vishal Furia remembers being fascinated with the genre from his early years. For the director, watching A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) in his childhood was a defining moment. “The character of Freddy haunted me to the extent that I would not sleep, fearing that he might trap me in my dreams,” he recalls, laughing. His love for the genre has led him to helm the Marathi movie, Lapachhapi (2017), and its Hindi adaptation Chhorii (2021). Now, the director is returning with Chhorii 2.  Vishal Furia The upcoming Prime Video film sees Nushrratt Bharuccha reprise her role of Sakshi, whose peaceful life is shattered when her seven-year-old daughter is kidnapped and taken back to the haunted fields. With the Bharuccha and Soha Ali Khan-starrer, the director has tried to create a horror movie that has roots in human emotions, from deep love to insecurities.  Furia argues that horror outings in Bollywood have largely involved over-the-top theatrics and formulaic narratives, which has diminished the genre’s credibility. “Bollywood horror has been more of a sleaze fest. It has lost its respect and attained a B-grade status. My endeavour is to strive to earn respect for the Indian classic horror genre. A well-made horror film is one that lingers in the viewer’s mind long after the credits roll. It can be effectively used to tell great human stories. I have tried to use the genre of ‘social horror’ in the Chhorii universe to delve into issues of social inequality and oppression,” he states. An underrated horror movie  I recommend: The Devil’s Backbone (2001) My all-time favourite fim in the genre: The Shining (1980)
