Showcasing Cultural Diversity and Cinematic Achievement

Los Angeles-based filmmaker Michelle Kunzler, recognized for her commitment to authenticity and focus on production design, has showcased her talent on two notable drama short films that highlight Indian culture and themes: ‘Empty Frames,’ directed by Anay Sanghvi, and ‘Echoes of a Dream’, directed by Shambhavi Jha. Kunzler’s production design has also played a pivotal role in the success of acclaimed projects such as ‘Sequoia’ and ‘Umit,’ both of which feature strong Asian-led casts and crews, further underscoring her dedication to diverse storytelling.

Umit (2023)

Kunzler's role as Production Designer on drama short 'Umit,' directed by Saniya Samatova, demonstrates her dedication to cultural accuracy. The short film, set in present-day Kazakhstan, follows a single mother's pursuit of justice after the loss of her daughter. Kunzler's meticulous research into Kazakh homes ensured that the set design, props, and overall aesthetic reflected the cultural nuances of current Kazakhstan. Her work was instrumental in creating a visually authentic environment that enhanced the film's emotional impact and contributed to its success. 'Umit' has garnered recognition and praise, earning an Official Selection at the 28th LA Shorts International Film Festival 2024.

Sequoia (2024)

Kunzler's work on 'Sequoia,' a sci-fi thriller short that she wrote, directed, and produced, showcases a blend of cultural awareness and creative production design. Set in a seemingly idyllic suburban neighborhood with 1950s-inspired AI maids, the film explores themes of sentience and the pursuit of truth. Kunzler's production design played a pivotal role in establishing the film's unique aesthetic, seamlessly merging futuristic elements with a traditional suburban setting to subvert conventional sci-fi thriller visuals. Her attention to detail and commitment to accurate representation helped create a visually captivating world that enhanced the film’s narrative.

Michelle Kunzler engages with the audience during a Q&A session at the 16th Los Angeles Reel Film Festival, October 2024.
