While one road will be constructed between Kurla and Vakola flyover; another elevated road will be built from MTNL junction at Bandra-Kurla Complex to LBS flyover at Kurla
There is good news for motorists who get stuck in traffic jams on the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) between Kalina and Kurla, as by next year, the construction of an elevated road from Kurla to the Vakola flyover, to ease traffic flow is to begin. Another elevated road corridor will be constructed from MTNL junction in BKC to LBS flyover at Kurla. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited tenders for the appointment of consultants for project management consultancy (PMC) services for the design and construction of the corridor.

Currently, a lot of traffic jams take place on the SCLR during morning and evening peak hours, especially between Kurla and Kalina as there are scrap dealers, second hand motor dealers’ shops and garages along it. The locals and MMRDA have complained several times to the BMC ward office and also to traffic police officials, as the shops and garages occupy almost a lane of the road in both directions, which leads to traffic jams. But there has not been a permanent solution to this.
MMRDA says
MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kawathkar said, “We are aware that constructing an elevated road between Kurla and Vakola is not an easy task, but we are confident that we will successfully complete the project and solve the traffic issue that motorists have to face on the SCLR stretch on WEH. We have invited tenders for the appointment of consultants for PMC services for the design and construction of the elevated road, and an elevated corridor that will be constructed between the MTNL junction in BKC and LBS flyover. The exact blue-print for the project will be ready by the year end and by next year, the project is expected to take off.”
An official from MMRDA’s engineering department said, “We expect that the construction of the project will begin mid-next year and in three years from the time of construction, it will be completed.”
MMRDA has also made it clear that it will be the job of the contractor to maintain the elevated corridor in the defect liability period.
Sources from MMRDA told mid-day that first the elevated road from Kurla to Vakola will be constructed and then the elevated corridor from MTNL junction to LBS flyover will be constructed at a later stage.
