As we get ready to enter the world of gambling with Teen Patti this Friday
As we get ready to enter the world of gambling with Teen Patti this Friday, its costume designer Ameira Punvani tells CS about three designing challenges that she had to overcome for the film:
Deglamourised look
When I first heard the story, I realised that it is a design centric film that brings out the dark side of a personality through gambling. Since I had never visited a gambling adda, I went on the Internet and then surfed through films to get an idea, but there is hardly anything that was of real help.
The net banyan, topi, polyester shirts and scarves were all inspired from Chor Bazaar and Mahim street.
Accessories like a kala dhaga, taveez, etc came to my notice here. I also registered that the women were wearing bright saris and that too very low. This is how you'll see Shraddha Kapoor in the film in below the navel saris with multi-coloured blouses.
Dressing up Big B
Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of a genius math professor who is completely into his theories, Pythagoras and Algebra all the time. So for him I designed the 50s style with double pleated baggy trousers. I made the dhobi wash and rewash the brand new clothes so that they lost their lustre and became soft and loose like he'd been wearing them for years.
But the real challenge was finding him a watch. I had the world at my feet, but keeping his character in mind, I went hunting in Chor Bazaar and got around five-six watches for him to choose from.
At the costume trial, I showed him all of them, along with an expensive one. I kept my fingers crossed. But I should have known that it is Big B who is particular about characterisation. He completely over looked all the other watches and settled for Rs 300 watch that required to be wound to work with a worn out leather strap. Every day at the shoot he would meticulously wind the time to the hour, just in case it should be in the scene we were shooting."
Delivering a six
Madhavan's character in the film spans six different avatars and accordingly I had to create those many looks for him, each completely unique. I had worked with him on Guru and we have great camaraderie. We had long discussions on each of his looks with intelligent inputs from Madhavan.
He starts off with being a young charismatic professor to a suave Italian Indian Casanova. The tweaked chic style worked fabulously for him, where I used a blend of seductive Italian cut suits and at times a casual pair of jeans worn with blazers in luxurious fabrics teamed with a dress shirt. Maddy looked like a million bucks!
