Senior cyber security expert Vijay Mukhi, 60, died at his residence on Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack. Cyber expert advocate Prashant Mali confirmed the news of his death with a tweet this morning. "Vijay Mukhi, fondly known as Internet Guru, passed away last night at his residence. For me he was inspiration to master C & C++ programming in 90s," Mali tweeted.

His last rituals were performed at the Hindu Smashan Bhoomi in Shivaji Park, a source said. Ritesh Bhatia, one of his former students and cyber expert, said that former senior police officers AN Roy and D Sivanandan attended his funeral. Mukhi was an engineer from VJTI. He launched his own computer training institute Vijay Mukhi's Computer Institute in the year 1989. Prior to this, he trained chartered accountants in Mumbai on computerising their work using the then prevalent Dbase 4 and Foxpro 2.0.

Mukhi was author of nearly 80 technical books ranging from C, C++, Foxpro 2.0, Unix to Animation, Power builder, Java and Net Odyssey Series. Mukhi's books are known to showcase the most difficult concepts in a simplified form, through small programmes. Apart from training and writing books, Mukhi was the lead developer for an e-security product Helios, which incorporates malware detection on the Windows Operating System. He was also the president of a body called Foundation of Information Security and Technology, which aims at finding resolutions to all cyber security-related problems, and a member of the High Court/State Government Committee on Pornography and Cyber Laws.
