A look at Hollywood's female on-screen superheroes

Female superhero

She might not have a cape or laser eyes or a league of superheroes at her command, but the female superhero has been enjoying a moment on the Hollywood radar. While we saw Scarlett Johansson rocking it with her steely-eyed determination and spine of steel in Lucy, there’s news that Warner Brothers is casting a female lead for the Harry Potter spin-off. It was also revealed that women-centric films have been out-grossing male films by quite a stretch this year. We take a look at some other female superheroes who have hit the big screen in style and some we would love to see.

Jessica Alba

Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four: The only female member in the Fantastic Four franchise and the second in command, Jessica Alba with her statuesque frame and unconventional powers almost overshadowed the boys in the film.

Storm

Storm: While fellow combatant, X-Man Wolverine got his own film, Marvel’s most recognized female superhero, Storm has been leading the X-Men brigade for a while now. So,if speculation is to be believed, it’s only a matter of time before the role, eternalised by Halle Berry, got her own movie

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman in Thor: A while back, Marvel revealed that an unidentified female character would be taking over the near invincible Thor. Last month it was revealed that Natalie Portman, who first brought the character of Dr Jane Foster alive in the original Thor movie, would be the new Thor

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Lawrence gained international acclaim primarily due to her stint in the ongoing Hunger Games. Leading the rebellion in the much-loved franchise, not only does she do complete justice to the character of Katniss Everdeen, she also portrays fine heroic skills and precision.

Melissa Benoist

Melissa Benoist in Supergirl: An upcoming television series, it was only a matter of time before Supergirl, the biological cousin of Superman and one of the last surviving kryptonians got her moment under the sun.

Scarlett Johansson

Black Widow: Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of the spy assassin aka Black Widow in The Avengers was par excellence to say the least. Also it should be noted that apart from her stand out role in the hit franchise, Scarlett also starred in Lucy as a new-age super powered character, and the movie beat Hercules and The Rock by quite a stretch. In fact, a We Want Widow hashtag was even trending on Twitter last month.
