Upskilling is a great way to get ahead of the pack by learning new skills that can support you in your job. The best part is that it doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg; you can upskill, especially with IT skills by spending a few thousand rupees and, in some instances, for free. Not to mention the certificates look great on your resume and on your LinkedIn profile. Here are some of the sites you can visit to add some skills to your CV.

LinkedIn Learning
LinkedIn, for most of us, is that website that has our work portfolio and CV. The courses are self-paced here as well, which is great if you are working and have limited time. LinkedIn has a mix of paid and free courses. The courses train in both soft skills and tech skills. So, you can learn how to write effective emails or learn how to master Excel or even machine learning using Python. To access the bulk of the courses, you may need to pay for a monthly subscription which costs R1,017. For that price, you can start any of the 17,000 courses available on the site, you get a certificate of completion when you finish a course and full access to LinkedIn Premium features. As far as subscriptions go, LinkedIn offers a great deal. The courses are, however, not proper degrees. However, the very fact that completion badges get added directly to your LinkedIn profile means there is value when potential recruiters look at it.

Cognitive Class
Cognitive Class covers more hardcore IT paths, including Data Science, Blockchain, and Big Data. The courses are free. There are courses for beginners and advanced users. On completion of modules in the course, you receive badges. Most courses seemed to be shared by IBM. However, there are a few subjects that are covered by other contributors. Cognitive Class also has several guided projects that can help users get hands-on experience in implementing solutions while learning the core values of the programme. This site is not the best when you are trying to find what you are looking for. That said, the courses provided have a lot of information and the hands-on experience for free is invaluable.

Coursera
Coursera has a lot of courses and some of them are hosted by well-known colleges and companies. Google for instance offers a UX course, the University of Michigan offers a Masters in Applied Data Science or you could even do a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Most Bachelor and Masters Programs on Coursera are expensive but you can also apply for scholarships. The site also has something called Coursera Plus which lets you study any courses of your choice from over 7,000 programs, at your own pace for a monthly fee of around R4,500 a month. If you plan to do multiple courses in a short span of time the Plus option is the best. However, it must be noted that since the RBI changed the rules on recurring payments, subscribing to Coursera Plus has become a little bit hard.

Udemy
Udemy is similar to Coursera, except that most of the courses offered on the platform are by individuals. The courses are diverse, from bizarre like traditional Japanese Reiki to something technical such as The Complete Android Developer Course. There are only a few free courses on Udemy. The trick with this platform is to find the right course and patiently wait for discounts. For example, a course that costs R3,500 can sometimes be purchased for as little as R500. The tutors themselves are knowledgeable and are available for guidance. The downside is that there is a lot to choose from and you don’t know at the outset whether the tutor is legitimately good with the subject matter. You have to rely on reviews and your own judgement.

Google Digital Garage
Learning SEO and other digital skills are essential regardless of what industry or business you are in. The courses on the site can teach you everything from soft skills such as public speaking to digital marketing and handling a big data platform like Google Cloud. The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course also includes a certification that can be useful for a job interview. All the courses on this site are free. Google does have paid courses but those are available on Coursera. Google Digital Garage also has Live Training sessions that are designed to be quick online classes that can impart some essential training in a matter of hours. These sessions usually have a set time and you have to register separately for them.
