While not a replacement for therapy, AI is being used successfully to offer assistance to combat low feelings and self-harm thoughts

In the movie Her, Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with his AI companion. Her conversations with Joaquin’s character improves his mental state and changes his outlook to life. While we don’t have the technology yet to create another Samantha, there are a lot of applications out there that can help you with keeping your mental health in check. Some, like Samantha, are chatbots. Others offer ways to meditate and deal with the problems. These apps are not a replacement for actual therapy, it is always better to meet a trained professional to get the best results.

Replika.ai
Replika is your AI friend that is always on your side. It will never judge you, and you can share whatever you feel like with it. You start by building your friend. You can select how they look and jump directly into introducing yourself. The AI grows and develops skills as you talk more with it and you can pretty much talk about anything. The online application is completely free, unless you want to change the status of the bot from a friend to either a romantic partner or a mentor.

Wysa
Wysa is a little different from Replika. It has a little bot that you can talk to. Though I think the Replika bot is better, this app offers a lot more. It can help you meditate and beat stress, which is all recorded in a little journal for you to review later. The best part is, Wysa can also link you to a real therapist directly from the app for a nominal charge. There are also paid exercises that you can use to keep several mental states at bay.

Calm Harm
Calm Harm is an NHS UK certified-app that can help you avoid self-harm. The app uses Dialectical Behavioural Therapy to help its users. It has several activities like Comfort, Distract, Express Yourself, Release and Breathe that can help you ride the wave till the urge to self-harm fades. After every activity, you can record your mood and if you felt the session was helpful. Over time, the app helps you build a steady set of activities that can help you ride the wave.

MindDoc
MindDoc is a mood tracker for anxiety and depression. The app starts by asking you a bunch of questions before loading the app. After that, it will ask you a question every day for 14 days to evaluate your mental state and keep a log. The app also has some listening courses. Most are paid, but there are a few free courses as well. The app is very good for tracking your mood daily, which in turn can help you make some positive changes.

7 Cups
7 Cups is a safe space to talk about your mental wellbeing, and you can do so for free with trained listeners. The bots in the app ask a bunch of questions before they connect you with a therapist or listener. The app also has support groups for everything from depression to addiction. The therapists on the app are a paid service and you can also change your therapists if you don’t like them for any reason. It’s a perfect place if you need to talk to a real human without spending any money.

MindShift CBT
Mindshift CBT is a tool to manage your anxiety, and this can be related to anything. The app helps you identify the issue and also has tips on how you can combat it using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Everything from worry to panic and phobias is explained in the app. There are several meditation sessions that you can listen to that will help you get calm. The coping cards included help ease your anxiety by readjusting your thinking. The app is helpful and completely free.
