With glass hair trending among fashionistas, influencers and celebrities, Sunday mid-day decided to give the trademark a shot, and that too on curls

Smooth and silky is not how this writer would describe her hair. Big, curly and messy are more appropriate adjectives. The reason we’re talking about textures is because a new hair trend seems to have taken social media by storm. Instagram is flooded with images and videos of influencers and celebrities flaunting super silky, smooth and shiny hair in myriad hues in their recent posts. From Kim Kardashian to Gigi Hadid and Nikita Dragun to Kylie Jenner, a host of celebs have been flaunting “glass hair”.

Glass hair is all about sharp, straight, and silky strands that reflect light and have a high-shine finish, mimicking the appearance of glass. That’s all well and good, but what about those of us who are not blessed with sleek or straight hair and are repelled by the idea of straighteners?

Schwarzkopf Professional has come up with IGORA Vibrance, a “demi permanent” hair colour for the first time in India. It is where hair colour meets hydration, which works as a topcoat for your hair to give lacklustre locks a lacquer without damaging them. The brand claims that the product gives a healthy and hydrated look. We decided to put it to the test.

It was a tough decision given that this writer has, what you call, virgin hair—strands that have never been colour-treated or chemically processed in any way. But the assurance that this hair colour range is powered with Moisturising Aquaxyl Technology which offers 100 per cent more shine along with hair protection instilled some confidence. That it is also free from ammonia and alcohol provided further encouragement.

At the Andheri West outpost of Schwarzkopf Professional, we were given a dazzling assortment of 15 colours to choose from. The best part is that the colour shade lasts up to 25 washes. It is aimed at the GenZ segment—we don’t fall into this demographic—who do not want commit to one colour for a long period of time.

It turns out that the colour of your locks also plays a major role in getting this style just right. Glass hair in a brown shade reflects the shine a lot more effectively than, let’s say, black. The look will be impossible to achieve if your hair is dried out or frizzy. Which is the reason our stylist Nikita Mohite suggests a shade that falls somewhere between tawny and caramel with gold highlights. According to Mohite, the active ingredients in the Fibre Bond Technology (present in the demi colour) penetrate into the hair shaft and create a layer around the hair bonds keeping it strong and full of elasticity through the chemical process.

The final process is the glass hair, which is also its quickest part. After washing the hair, Mohite uses a few drops of the oil-like serum on the lengths and tips of the hair. She then divides the hair into different sections and applies glossy liquid through the ends to keep it in place.

If you end up feeling like a new person, blame it on the hair. Our waves appear enhanced due to the gloss and a simple scrunch. The shiny glass hair is especially suitable for festive occasions and costs Rs 2,500. Remember, humidity is your nemesis. So, save this experiment for a dry day.
