January is also called Pride Month, and here’s how you can make the best of it

It’s a great time to be gay (or straight) in the city, especially since today marks the beginning of a month-long celebration by the LGBTQ community. Yaariyan, an initiative by NGO Humsafar Trust, is a bunch of youngsters who are behind Pride Month’s activities, some light and some deep, which will ultimately culminate in the grand Pride March on February 6.
Never attended one before? Well, we suggest you mark your calendar well in advance for what is known to be a complete colour riot.
But, there is much to do before that. This evening, you can take the lane beside Tulip Star Hotel and reach Juhu Beach for a fun set of nostalgia-inducing games such as the lemon-and-spoon sprint and an obstacle race. The beach calls out again next Sunday evening, from 4 pm onwards, for you can show off your kite-flying skills along with Gay Bombay.
Week Two of Pride Month brings in those meaningful engagements, such as a family meet at the Juhu Rotary Centre between 4 pm to 9 pm on January 16. Coming out in our country is a journey filled with struggles for most in the country, and here is a great chance to learn a handy tip or two from other families. Have a story to share? Need some support? This could be the place.
The great thing about Pride Month is that it gets together a number of institutions and LGBT-rights ogransations in the city together. This means there is a heap of film screenings and plays that you should watch out for.
On January 23, the Godrej Culture Lab in Vikhroli and The Hive in Khar will host film and documentary screenings by Kashish and QMovies respectively. But, what we are waiting anxiously for is a flashmob by Yaariyan, who we know have been rehearsing for a month. But the when and where are a surprise; you will have to just hang around to be in the know.
