As a teenager; he was consistently ranked in the top ten in his age group nationally. In 1992 he won the Western India U-14 tournament. His victory can largely be attributed to the training he received when he was at the Britannia Amritraj Academy from 1991-1994.

Despite his busy lifestyle, Ameya still finds the time to lead a healthly and fitness conscious life with yoga being dominant in his exercise regime. However, tennis remains a passion. This passion for the sport has led to Enerzal, India’s leading balanced energy drink, becoming the official sports drink partner to India’s most prestigious tennis tournament -- The Aircel Chennai Open.
Describing the brand’s association with various sports, Ameya said that the belief at Enerzal is that a healthier India is a stronger India and sport is the best way to inculcate a healthy lifestyle. As a brand Enerzal has been ever present across multiple sports such as football with Bengaluru FC and also Subroto Cup Football Tournament, India’s most famous and largest Inter School Football Tournament, Kabaddi with U Mumba, swimming with Senior National Aquatic Championships and is a partner to some of India’s leading running events including the Mumbai Marathon. The brand’s dedication to inculcating a culture of sport within Indians extends to the grassroots as the company has partnered Sports For All and School Football Championship.

After all, it was like a second homecoming of sorts for Ameya since he has had a long association with the Chennai and playing tennis in that city during his days as a Britannia Amritraj Tennis Academy student.
And as he described it, the business decision also made sense. After as India’s premier tennis tournament, the Aircel Chennai Open was telecast live on TV and the brand exposure was tremendous. But that’s not all, since as a former national level player, Ameya understood the significance of a platform like ACO provides for aspiring tennis players. Over the last decade India has made significant strides in tennis and this success is in part due to the exposure the tournament provides to Indian players.
Anand Amritraj, who remembers Ameya fondly from his time at BAT, said: "When Ameya was at BAT, we saw in him a spark. The passion and commitment to tennis is what stood out even at that young age. To see him back in the tennis fraternity, albeit as a sponsor of the Aircel Chennai Open, confirms that passion that we saw all those years back. Tennis stays with you all your life, Ameya's love for the sport confirms that."
