American skiing great Lindsey Vonn has spoken in support of Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka, who received a lot of backlash after she refused to attend press conferences at the French Open to protect her mental health.

Vonn felt that Osaka has shed light on mental health, a topic which is overlooked. Talking about the choice and the reasons that led Osaka to retire from Roland Garros earlier this year, Vonn told Forbes magazine: “I think we are a lot farther along in the process of making mental health more a topic that can be talked about. I think that what Naomi has done is shine a huge global light on issues of mental health and support, and towards normalising it.”
Vonn urged athletes not to feel ashamed in seeking help to tackle mental health issues. “I think mental health has been widely overlooked. And I hope every athlete can seek out support and not feel ashamed,” said Vonn.
