Fernando Alonso categorically denied any involvement in the latest scandal to cast a shadow over Formula One. An extraordinary meeting of the World Motor Sport Council has been called for September 21 in Paris during which the suspicious events of last season's Singapore Grand Prix will be debated.
At the heart of the case are suggestions then Renault driver Nelson Piquet deliberately crashed his car to assist Alonso, who went on to take a surprise victory. Piquet is understood to have provided a sworn affidavit at the FIA headquarters on July 30 giving his version of events.
Piquet has referred to being "in a very fragile and emotional state of mind" due to concerns over his future with the team at the time of the race.
Despite finishing 12th in the drivers' championship last season in which he was out-qualified by Alonso at every race, the Brazilian was eventually retained.
