New Delhi: Legendary marathon runner Ashis Roy, 82, had to undergo a neurosurgical operation after the right side of his body got paralysed soon after the New York Marathon in 2011.

But just six months later, Roy, a veteran of 115 marathons, participated in the Gurgaon Half Marathon. "I just want people to remember me as a runner from India where running is not so popular," Roy, a cardiologist, told MiD DAY on the sidelines of the release of his book 'Wonderful Joys of Running' yesterday.

"I have seen lots of ups and downs in my 25-year running career. I remember, in the 2004 Mumbai Marathon a panwala at Pedder Road saved me from dehydration by giving me water and a wet towel. I just can't forget him, " Roy, who completed his 100th race in Mumbai in 2011, said.

"Running makes me feel wonderful. It makes me extremely happy," added Roy who holds the Indian record in the 55+ age category.
