Hamilton hasn't stood on the top step of the podium since last October's US Grand Prix, the race at which the Briton clinched his third world championship.
He started on pole in the opening two races only for tardy starts to blunt his challenge for the win. But the 31-year-old is the most successful driver in Shanghai, with four victories, and heads into Sunday's race determined to turn the tide with a hat-trick of Chinese Grand Prix triumphs.
"It's not been a smooth start to the season for me, so to be in the championship position I'm in right now is actually pretty positive," Hamilton, who lies second in the standings, said.
"Now we go to China for the next battle. It's a track that's been good to me over the years... so hopefully this race can be the turning point."
Rosberg, meanwhile, has won both the season-opening races and is very much the man in form.
