Incheon: The Indian handball teams campaign ended on a disappointing note at the 17th Asian Games after both men's and women's units lost their respective third and final Preliminary Round matches, here yesterday.

While men were thrashed 12-47 by Japan, the women went down 12-39 to China, crashing out of the tournament. Having lost both their previous matches in Group A, the men's team were playing for pride today.

But they could hardly pose a threat to their Japanese counterparts, trailing 6-21 after the first round before losing the second half 6-26. The men's team will now be playing to avoid wooden spoon on September 28.

The Japanese were incisive in their striking with Daisuke Miyazaki being the top-scorer, converting 10 out of 11 shots he took at the goal, while Ishikawa Izuru sent in seven goals.

The Indians, on the other hand, found the going tough. Greenidge Ducha turned out to be the highest scorer with only three goals out of four shots he took.

Meanwhile, the Indian eves, who did well yesterday to hold Thailand to an exciting tie at 26-26, failed to carry on the momentum against a strong Chinese outfit.

The Indians were trailing 6-20 in the opening 30 minutes and then fell to 6-19 in the second half in their final Group A match at the Suwon Gymnasium here.

Maninder Kaur was the top scorer for India with four goals. For China, Zhang Haixia and Sha Zhengwen scored six and five goals, respectively.

The women's team will now be playing for 5th-8th classification place on September 30.
