Former cricketer Ajit Agarakar is all set to represent India again, albeit in another sport this time.

Mumbai-based Agarkar will represent the country in the world finals of 22nd Annual World Corporate Golf Challenge in Cascais, Portugal next month after winning the regional rounds of the tournament in India yesterday.

Agarkar and his teammate Shabbir Rawjee, playing off handicaps 17 and 19 respectively, won with a total of 62 stableford points in Bangalore.

Agarkar took to golf after retiring from cricket in October 2013. "I was always interested in golf, but I never took to it while I was playing cricket. I wish I had started playing golf earlier as it could have given me an opportunity to play at some of the most beautiful courses around the world while I was travelling. I am super excited to play the world finals now," Agarkar told mid-day yesterday.

The former Mumbai Ranji Trophy-winning skipper was introduced to golf by his late friend and cricketer Rajesh Sanghi. "Rajesh was an avid golfer. He would insist I take up golf. It's because of him that I am into golf," he said.

Agarkar is hoping to get a single digit handicap at some stage. "I am not a member of any club, so I only get to play in invitational tournaments. "Being a sportsperson, the competitive edge comes naturally. So, if I am playing the sport, I might as well get better at it. I hope to get to a single digit handicap," Agarkar said.
