Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists India beat Spain 3-2 via the shootout in the FIH Pro League at the Kalinga Stadium here on Sunday. Goalkeeper Krishan Pathak was the hero in the shootout as the Spanish players clearly struggled to beat him as often as they would have liked.

Earlier, India skipper Harmanpreet scored the opening goal of the match off a penalty corner in the fifth minute and then doubled the lead in the third quarter. Spain fought back and scored through skipper Marc Miralles off a penalty corner in the third quarter.

Then, in the fourth quarter, With five minutes left for full time, Spain’s Pere Amat somehow got the ball into the Indian goal to take the match into the shootout. Amat’s shot was padded away by goalkeeper Pathak, but the ball struck defender Jugraj Singh’s foot and entered the goal much to the dismay of the Indian team.
